Choosing ATF for 2001 Prism/Corolla Dexron II Transmission

At the risk of raising a topic that has been discussed many times...alas I still have a few questions about which transmission fluid to use in my old 2001 Chevy Prism that calls for Dexron III. I've read many of the discussions here and gathered that:

1.) Any Dexron VI fluid is a correct choice.
2.) Most of the multi-vehicles fluids are also a correct choice (valvoline maxlife, mobile one multi vehicle, castrol transmax full synthetic multi-vehicle, etc)

I want to use a full synthetic, I've been using full synthetic multi-vehicle in this transmission for many years & miles with great success. So, "don't mess with success", right? And, I want to get something I can get locally. Looks like of the local options I could choose Valvoline Dexron VI, Castrol Transmax Full synthetic multi-vehicle, or Valvoline Maxlife.

Now the question, my local autozone has some Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle on "clearance" for $25. Not an amazing clearance in my opinion...but cheap enough for me to consider it. However, the import Multi-Vehicle claims to be "synthetic technology" it does not claim to be "fully synthetic". I read that as synthetic blend. Also, it specifies that it meets Dexron IIIH & Dexron II-D, no mention of Dexron III. My reading here suggests that Dexron IIIH is compatible with Dexron III but if so why not mention that on the spec sheet.
Is this actually compatible with my Dexron III transmission?
Is it really synthetic? As mentioned earlier, I read "synthetic technology" as a fancy way of saying "synthetic blend".

My inclination to go with either Maxlife if I want to be cheap or go with the the Valvoline Dexron VI which also claims to be fully synthetic, and skip the slightly tempting clearance fluid.

Any thoughts?

All of the options you mentioned would be fine including the on sale Castrol Import stuff.

About the III vs IIIh difference... It's nothing to worry about. GM made minor changes to the Dexron III spec over time but all flavors of Dexron III are fully backwards compatible with Dexron II.

I would go with a licensed Dex VI since it replaces previous versions. I am not a big supporter of the multi vehicle fluids such as Max Life.

The older formula of MaxLife absolutely transformed the transmission in my wife's '02 Corolla, but the new stuff is apparently quite different, made for newer cars that use thinner Dex VI and similar.

I wouldn't use Dexron VI. It's a little on the thin side in my research and my liking. Mercon and Mercon V is interchangeable with Dexron III. I've been using SuperTech Dex/Merc in the 4Runner. The next round will be Mobil1 ATF which is in all my vehicles except for the Dodge.

Best you could use is this old school fluid and change at every 30-50k. My old 4 speeds love this more than anything else I've used. Although new thinner fluids claim to be compatible they are to a degree as they will work but these old 4 speeds love the proper stuff from experience.

Only HD and amazon sell it for a low price. Amazon has a prime sale for it.

Any Dexron type ATF will be fine. The Castrol Import is synthetic blend. The Valvoline Dexron VI is a better choice, or aay full synthetic multi at a good price.

Thanks everyone for you're input. Seems that my questions are answered. The on sale Transmax import would work but it is a synthetic blend so not really what I'm looking for. I'm kind of leaning toward going with the Castrol Transmax Full Synthetic multi-vehicle. That's what I use in the Sienna and sometimes it's nice to just standardize on one fluid when it's possible.

The Valvoline EP is a little difficult to find at the moment. I have some on order thru NAPA but inexplicably delayed. O'Reilly doesn't seem to carry it at all. RA shows out of stock. However I did find it at my local AutoZone.

I wish my WM carried it. I love tacking fluids onto our grocery orders for outside pickup, then I never have to step foot in the store!!

M1 ATF for a recommendation. Also would consider Valvoline MV Import synthetic atf is a great fluid as well. It has Dex3 and Mercon recommendation and has worked fine in my 05 Element, 93c 1500 and f350. Was super cheap on zon but they raised the price by $14, so EP is as cheap or cheaper, both good fluids.
