At the risk of raising a topic that has been discussed many times...alas I still have a few questions about which transmission fluid to use in my old 2001 Chevy Prism that calls for Dexron III. I've read many of the discussions here and gathered that:
1.) Any Dexron VI fluid is a correct choice.
2.) Most of the multi-vehicles fluids are also a correct choice (valvoline maxlife, mobile one multi vehicle, castrol transmax full synthetic multi-vehicle, etc)
I want to use a full synthetic, I've been using full synthetic multi-vehicle in this transmission for many years & miles with great success. So, "don't mess with success", right? And, I want to get something I can get locally. Looks like of the local options I could choose Valvoline Dexron VI, Castrol Transmax Full synthetic multi-vehicle, or Valvoline Maxlife.
Now the question, my local autozone has some Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle on "clearance" for $25. Not an amazing clearance in my opinion...but cheap enough for me to consider it. However, the import Multi-Vehicle claims to be "synthetic technology" it does not claim to be "fully synthetic". I read that as synthetic blend. Also, it specifies that it meets Dexron IIIH & Dexron II-D, no mention of Dexron III. My reading here suggests that Dexron IIIH is compatible with Dexron III but if so why not mention that on the spec sheet.
Is this actually compatible with my Dexron III transmission?
Is it really synthetic? As mentioned earlier, I read "synthetic technology" as a fancy way of saying "synthetic blend".
My inclination to go with either Maxlife if I want to be cheap or go with the the Valvoline Dexron VI which also claims to be fully synthetic, and skip the slightly tempting clearance fluid.
Any thoughts?
