Chonda snowblower governer

Goddangit. Stupid governer on our 1 year old Craftsman snowblower, with the 208CC OHV Chonda engine is annoying. At mostly anything above 2/3 throttle (thought it will do it as low as 1/2 throttle) it bounces up and down on the governer. Would this be likely fixable without taking it to sears?

surely a honda engine wouldnt run anything less than perfect. It must be the Craftsman parts...
 
Try a bit of Gumout Carb cleaner spray on the carb linlage around the governor (engine not running) and see if that doesn't clear up the problem. FWIW-- Oldtommy
 
Usually oscillating RPMs indicates a carb issue, not a governor issue. Are you running old gas in it? Did you store it w/ old gas? A good carb cleaning might be in order. It's also possible there's a vac leak around the carb.

It did this last year when it was new, just not this bad. Gas is new, it was stored with Sta-Bil. I have some Sta-Bil, some MMO too. Maybe I'll try some of that and spray the linkage and see if it gets any better. It's just very annoying is all.

I think they had to bring them in line with EPA regulations. On mowers, they (sneakily) solved it by putting manual choke cables on them. You can choke them slightly to get them to stop starving for gas and surging. Is there an adjustment screw hiding behind the carb as you look at it? Probably is, and if you can get a long screwdriver on it, you might be able to adjust it out. There's only about 1/4 turn before they hit the stopper though. How does it run when it's on half choke?
 
Often when an engine is hunting, it's due to inconsistent fuel supply. Could be a blocked air vent in the fuel cap, restricted fuel supply from the tank to the carb, sticky or mis-adjusted float/float valve in the carb or dirty jets in the carb. First thing I'd do is check the fuel vent, follow the fuel to the carb to make sure it's flowing well. If all is well, there, check your float setting specifications. If all that is correct, it's time to pull the carb, completely disassemble it, including removal of the jets. Clean every component thoroughly, blow compressed air through all passages in the carb body, carefully re-assemble everything and make sure the float/float needle assembly is working right. While you're working with the float, get the specs for the float setting and ensure the float is set accordingly. It can make all the difference in the world if it's out of adjustment.
