Chonda Briggs

While at menards today I saw that they had a brute power generator. I have been wanting to get a generator for a while and thought I finally found an affordable one with a Briggs engine. It says Briggs and Stratton on the starter and has the logo stamped into the valve cover but nothing about it is a Briggs other than that. The engine block looks identical to all the other Chonda variants they sell. Even the generator is identical to the other brands.

All the other brute brand equipment has actual Briggs engines except for a pressure washer than has a honda.


Anyone else seen any other Chonda Briggs engines?

B&S engines have been made in China for years now.

The newer OHV B&S are, at least partially made in china.

The older flatheads, other than some specific components (e.g. those Walbro LMS clone sidedraft carbs, certain gaskets, etc.), was made in US.

I wouldn't call it a chonda (my perception of chonda still bears better overall quality than, say, some sino-made kohler or no-name OHV mower engines ...), for at least if they try their best to clone a real honda, the overall outcome should be fairly ok...

Anyways, to each of their own...just something that B&S tries to compete in a market filled with low-end chinese stuff, and yet still trying hard to comply with the latest OPE emissions standards that has become really stringent over the past decade or so.

Also: don't forget that other than chonda, there's prolly csuzuki, ckawazaki, csubarurobin or, the most copied of all (other than honda), would be cmitsubishi OPE engines out there coming from china.

Probably a generac engine if it looked chonda with briggs markings.....i think briggs owns generac or generac own briggs..not sure which....

They do have some Chinese made Honda clones. They are pretty good and the parts availability (as with almost all Briggs engines) is 2nd to none and easily available. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a piece of equipment with that engine.

And to the person above that said Briggs engines are made in China, SOME of them are made in China, some of them are made here.

There are some Briggs engines made in China but that wasn't what this was.

This was a copy of a gx honda. Just like every other Chonda generator out there. There was nothing Briggs about it other than the name. It looked just like the Chonda generac and the Chonda powermate sitting next to it.

I don't think that generac or Briggs has any part of one another. Edit. Briggs did own generac but not any more. When Briggs owned them they didn't make any generators due to a non compete agreement.

Not all. The one on my lawn tractor was assembled here in the States according to the tag. Some of the pieces probably were made here, and some from overseas.

Briggs has a large decal on many of their engines saying that they're made in the USA of US and global parts. Take that to mean what you will, I guess.

I've had a Chonda motor from Harbor Freight on a log splitter. It's been going 6 years strong. Change oil every season.
