Chinese Jeeps?

I would think even though they are Italian owned they would still want to maintain production here as marketing. People still think of Chrysler as an American company. When I bring up the idea that the Sienna is more American than a caravan because both are made here and at least Toyota is traded on the New York Stock Exchange people have a problem with that.

No, it says may eventually make all models there...doesn't say make them all there.

The Chinese still build near clones of the old Cherokee, so they certainly have experience.

I hope they don't move production of US-sold vehicles or engines to China the way GM has done, but it may be inevitable that Asia-market Jeeps do get built there.

A couple things-

The article is about localizing production, meaning Jeeps for China will be built in China.

The entire Washington Examiner article is not based on any original reporting, but instead based on info taken from a Bloomberg article, which says this:
Quote:
Manley referred to adding Jeep production sites rather than shifting output from North America to China.

The Washington Examiner is a conservative paper, so take what they about this with a grain of salt. This is more of an editorial than a real news story.

It seems the Examiner is misinterpreting information in the Bloomberg article, either on purpose or by accident. Nowhere in the Bloomberg article do they say US production will be stopped and replaced with Chinese production. The article is about Jeep making models in China as demand in China rises.

They have produced Cherokees for years. The Chinese gov't gave a couple dozen to the Bolivian police force about 8 to 10 years ago. here in Tarija the police did a big parade with the 14 they received. Finished driving around the plaza. Lead car stopped. 11 more piled into the back of each other.

I hope the Washington Examiner doesn't find out that John Deere is also "moving production" to China.

As I understand it, (and I may have been misled) when you produce a product in the People's Republic of China, you forfeit the tooling to China.

So let's say 3 different factories can make your product. You get nothing.

How many factories make a copy of the Honda GY6? Honda doesn't get a dime from that.

Political trash.

The newspaper is the conservative competitor to Washington Post. Some propoganda pre election.

I'll let you guys in on a little secret-it's not going to happen. Do I have an insider's view on this? [censored] right I do...

ONLY chinese jeeps are going to be in China...the only way that will happen is if they build some "budget" jeep...doubt that will happen..

They just spent MILLIONS revamping their plants...they're not going to waste money here...too much invested here right now. They'll actually planning to use some of these plants to build some Fiats too...

This is now the THIRD time this article has been posted on my sites in the last two days....it's starting to get real annoying now. Sorry guys, it's starting to make me lose my mind here..

The funny thing is you act like the WP is some kind of bastion of the free press!

Hilarious!

They're the real deal, so to speak. It's not like the other cars where the Chinese blatantly copied the design. The XJs they build are with original AMC Tooling.

Until a few years ago, there was very little that was changed. Recently, they updated the front to have IFS ... but from everything I've found on it, they are still using AMC tooling. Pretty cool.
