China has a population that is 4 times that of the US.

It has been building and aquiring military troop and weapon carrying ships and subs.

They have also aquired missiles and a maneuverable warhead designed to defeat U.S. missile defenses.
http://www.washtimes.com/specialreport/20050626-122138-1088r.htm

It has made its presence known in ocean areas that are patroled by other countries.

It is wanting to buy Unocal,an AMERICAN company.

Is it good for a communist country to buy and own a company that is/was US owned?

If the transaction goes through,China will aquire the oil and other assest that the US used to own.

China already has troops in Sudan,it is said that they are there for the oil.

Will China attack Tiawan?

If so,will the US defend them as they have promised?

An attack could happen in around 2 years according to some.

What does everyone else think?

I asked this before: What if a USA company wants to buy controlling interest in a Chinese company? Not going to happen - we should treat them the same. Not rude, just the same treatment.

I hope that deal doesn't go through. Unfortunently, it's all about the money. I've been nervous about China for some time. Think about it, they pretty much have all our trade secrets because they build everything for us. They have been really quite since the cold war was over. They are still slowly building their military stockpile up. Could be a sleeping giant.

I'm chinese.
As a chinese person, all I want is to have no war, to live in peace.
No offence to american people, USA had already been the strongest country since I was born and I have never been worrying about USA(including trading, war .....). Today USA is probably a even stronger country than before and China is still a developing country, what are you worrying about?

The cats outa the bag though! China has already bought up many other US companies, many defense type companies in the hope of gaining secret technical military info. I dunno. They're expaning their military at an unprecidented rate which any global power does historically. IMO, we need to do the same. We're downsizing and adapting out military primarily to the threat from radical islam; we should be building our military up to compete with China. I'd like to say we could become allies in the long run but I have my doubts. Human beings historically haven't gotten along very well!

I think that China is a country to be reckoned with. We have more to fear from a Capitalist China than we ever did a Communist China. China has the resources and cheap labor to 'clean our clocks' tradewise. The fact that "Patents" and "Trademarks" seem to mean little to the Chinese is a big problem for us. The fact that
many of the brigthest Chinese minds are educated right here in the USA is another uniquely American phenomenon. Not only have we educated many of the Muslims who now terrorize us but many of those who will eventually take away our industries.

PS. I forgot to add that the Clinton Administration allowed much of our military technology to fall into the hands of the Chinese thus hastening their rise to power.

I am not concerned nor paranoid about war with China. I have travelled often in China (and Taiwan and Hong Kong) and found the Chinese people to be people like all other people on the earth - needing more of life and things and family centered. Really I have no argument with the Chinese people.

For many reasons, I highly doubt China will outright attack Taiwan. The only really way to resolve this issue is for China to actually become a free country and Taiwan join the country!

As China modernizes - the government is, of course, trying to get away with whatever they can. It just is not right for the RMB to not float, or have artificial barriers for imported products - while exporting all manner of goods, or to have zero patent/copyright protection enforcement, or not allow foreign corporation ownership. This is not paranoia - it's the truth!!!!

I notice hungdynasty while living a privileged life in Hong Kong did not address these legitimate issues.

Did you guys actually read the info in the link. This has been looked at even prior to the Bush administration. I even remember Clinton expressing some concerns.

I spent a lot of time in Taiwan and take the capabilities of mainland China very seriously.

We have to take it seriously and analyze every situation. It is plausible that their government may want to project military power in the region.

We are not in conflict with anyone at the moment except terrorist. Many Islamic countries are good allies. Not seeing the potential power that China can wield is being blind.

China is building great Naval capability and has some fairly sophisticated new main battle tanks and other armor. Improved missle systems etc... I hardly think you can compare terrorists to a military super-power like China.

I think the question really should be "What is wrong with China building their own military?" If the wrong is that by then, the US will have another military power able to match up against them, instead of the US being the most dominant military power, we are just a selfish bunch of organisms on Earth.

Spy planes fly daily along the Chinese coast right over the border that separates the Chinese sea territory and public sea.

Imagine Chinese spy planes doing that on the West Coast of the US, we'd be shooting nukes already!

In many ways, I think having two world powers instead of just one will make the world a better place. I am sure the population in the rest of the world agrees with me.

Yep. Free trade should run both ways...

Again folks I have no concern with China having a strong military. If they feel threatened, then who are we to question them. OTOH, we can watch them and they better not threaten us, that's all.

Read my post about trade....not war.

When did you get the time to ask them all?

When did you ask them all and they told you that they loved us for being their World Police?

If the rest of world would get their shiite together, we wouldn't have to. Sometimes I feel we should be isolationinst, but wasn't it that way before WWII?

As far as China military? Didn't thier leader essentially say they would attack the US, something along those lines. Someone posted a link here I think.
It has little to do with another superpower, everything to do with which country that is, because of leaders...NOT citizens.

Military or at least dual use technology is some of the few high value added products that we're able to sell to China; we need something to to try to offset the massive trade inbalance with Walmart, er, I mean China.

We seem to be in a situation looking at China and other countries, like England was looking at the rest of the world before WWI. I'm not suggesting that another world war is in the coming, but there will be fierce competition for energy supplies and markets.

A State Department official involved in the issue said the transfer of the chips inside Boeing 737 control systems was approved orally, without a written authorization, during a period of disruption in U.S. government operations caused by Hurricane Isabel in mid-September.
"We wanted the transfer of the aircraft to proceed on time," the official said. "It was extremely important to Boeing that the sale of civil aircraft to China go through."
The export also was approved by President Bush under a waiver of the ban on military-related sales to China for the 737s.
Mr. Hyde and Mr. Lantos, however, stated that the waiver still required Boeing to obtain a State Department export license and to obtain assurances from China that the chips would not be diverted to military use by the Chinese.
The State Department official said the U.S. government on Jan. 7 amended the International Traffic in Arms Regulations to ease export regulations on QRS11 chips when they are inside commercial aircraft. Additional new rules are expected to be issued next week.
The new regulations were opposed by the Pentagon, the official said, although they were approved by an administration interagency group.
Disclosure of the chip transfer comes as the Bush administration is seeking to loosen export controls on defense-related goods to several nations as part of its pro-business policies.

I think that China is in some ways,a mystery.

They have been for years. They only let people know what they want them to.

While this applies to any country,China seems to really make an effort to do such.

What is bothersome about China is the fact that they are a communist country.

This fact makes the change of leader somewhat of a scary idea.

We have seen this effect in North Korea.NK has been in its own world for some time but it seems that the leader they have now is even more out of touch.

This same thing could happen to China.

A change in leadership could bring about a leader with even more communistic views and ideals.

As in an earlier post, the people of china have little input with the government.

Remember Tiananmen Square?

China, with its 2-2.5 million man army could easily overthrow an uprising by its people.

As far as trade, the US in my opinion needs to make the field more even between the two countries.

Pablo made some good points regaring this.

What is fair is fair.

This was also a point of probable contention regarding the Chinese military buildup.

The US government needs to respect China but it also must look out for its own regarding trade and the lack of respect that China has shown for US industry.

Pirating of products shows that China doesnt repect other countries/companies patents, time and investments.

This makes trading with them difficult and unfair to other companies.

I need to remember where you live. central California. So, I know that you "open minded" people are a little off. You state that the "rest of the world would agree with you" Are you the same type of person who thinks we should sit down with terrorists and try to come to an agreement and sing kumbaya? Maybe we should apologize to the Iraqis who's 1 million+ families who had someone killed by Saddam, tell them we're sorry for being the "world police". We'll tell Saddam that we're sorry for killing his sons who raped and killed tens of thousands of people, we will put Saddam back in power.

You're sitting in Marin County, the RICHEST county in the WORLD and you think you know what other people in this world think??????? This is what I don't get about you democrats, lets take the former prez nominee, Joker Kerry, a BILLIONAIRE, yup, he really knows what an average joe goes through. Yup, them dems are really there for those on welfare. What a joke. I find it a farce that you think you know what everyone in the world wants or feels. But, you haven't a clue. You haven't a clue. Did you know that you haven't a clue?

The FACT of the matter is, there NEEDS to be a world "cop". I gaurantee you that there are LESS wars due to the USA being the most powerful. If it weren't for us, N. Korea would have attacked S. Korea. Iraq would be in Kuwait and probably Saudi Arabia. China would own Taiwan. The french and the english, the rest of Europe, Canada, even Mexico would be speaking German.

Nevermind, it's no use.
