I have a 1992 Chevy "Sport" C-1500 that I bought new. It's had less than $400 worth of repairs in 18 years of use (and that includes converting the AC to 134r). Currently has 130K on it, and still going strong. Most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

Parts for your truck are CHEAP and EASY to get!!
You mentioned Maxlife Oil... I have used Maxlife in both Semi-Syn and Full Synthetic versions on different vehicles and it is one of the best oils out there!
If it were mine, I would start a list of preventative maintenance service you can do on the weekends (all of which I've done to mine in the past).....
* I like using Valvoline Maxlife 5-30 oil and filters from AC Delco orx (NAPA Gold)
* Replace the distributor cap, rotor, plugs and wires with AC Delco parts.
* Install a Prestone Engine Flush Kit on the heater coolant hose and flush the coolant system. Research here what type of coolant to use or just use GM Dex-Cool.
* Clean the Throttle Body with Seafoam
* Decarbonize the Combustion Chambers with Seafoam (search the site)
* Disconnect the Power Steering Return Line and while the engine is running, have it drain into a catch can while you refill the reservoir, or just use a turkey baster to suck out and then refill it with new fluid. I like Valvoline SynPower Power Steering fluid and Lubegard Additive
* Spray Seafoam Aerosol throught some of the vacuum lines going to the Throttle Body to clean out the carbon and gunk.
* Clean Transmission Pan, replace filter (Wix) install universal drain plug in pan (Oreily's and NAPA have them). My 4l60 holds around 3.5 - 4.0 quarts. When I first bought the truck back in 2005, I drained and refilled the trans once a week 4 times, then drained/refilled every engine oil change. I used Wal-Mart Super Tech DEXIII because it was cheap to use in frequent drain/refills and it was licensed from GM. Use any quality DEXIII equivalent or Valvoline Maxlife ATF. I felt multiple drain / refills was better than a flush on a transmission after 150k miles. Lubegard makes an excellent ATF additive (Red bottle), and the only additive I would use in a trans.
*** If you have the time, $$ and know how, install a Corvette Servo and/or Trans-Go Shift Kit
* Drain and refill the rear axle. I used Valvoline Dura-Blend 80-90 gear lube and Loctite Gasket Maker for my 14 bolt diff with G80 locker.
* Run a few tankfuls of Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant (fuel system cleaner). Dont waste your $ on the small one-shot bottles. Buy the $9 quart, its good for 3-4 tanks of fuel.
* Remove and Clean the Battery terminals and spray battery terminal protectant (red film) over them
* If you service the brakes, go ahead and replace the calipers. They are dirt cheap and easy to replace if you are already installing new rotors and pads!
Your Silverado should run like a champ! My 1995 GMC K1500 still runs well with 175k+ miles. You should get a ton more miles on yours!

I was going to say I had an 88 light duty 3/4 ton 350 TBI.
260,000 miles very limited maintenance original transmission. Couple altenators and water pumps that was about it. TBI is dead nuts reliable. Funny the array of experiences you get with ownership of similar trucks.

i admit i am spoiled by owning several toyotas trucks and the chevys pale in comparison in build quality. still its no excuse for the many cheaply made parts i have had to replace on my 2 chevys. union wages no doubt caused gm to go with the lowest bidder on many parts resulting in many premature failures

Tsk Tsk Tks. Unions had nothing to do with it. For yeares it had to do with GM not realizing that customers want quality interiors and reliability. they certainly get it now. I suggest you go to a dealer and take a look at new GMC Sierra, Chevy Silverados.

Everyone has different experiences with vehicles. I don't think I would consider any of the domestic trucks "unreliable". They last a very long time. Even here in the rusty northeast there are thousands of 80's trucks still rolling around every day.

Yeah, good thing Toyota didn't go with "lowest bidder" on their throttle pedals or they might have had some REAL problems. Glad you could clarify how Toyota has such great build quality -- I wouldn't have guessed it by all the recent publicity.
