He's asking $3300. I'm going to talk to him either later on today, or tomorrow and make an offer.

I'm not too concerned about repairs, I can handle most of the basic stuff, but for more complex repairs we have a mechanic in the extended family. The engine compartment has WAY more room than my Acura, so it looks like it would be easier to work on...

Oh yeah I had to replace and alternator also. But any one can do that on these trucks in 15 minutes.

insurance isn't horrible on it but its not great either. Think I was at something like 800 a year on my 95. Though the truck I replaced it with a 2009 Silverado crew cab 4x4 was only a 100 dollar more to insure.

Lets see on my 95 in the 8 years i had it. I had the climate control get a bad switch and have to be replaced. A throttle posistion sensor, the 4x4 engage thing, alternator, starter, one door handel and 2 brake lines. Oh yeah an intake gasket even though it saw no dex.

the 4x4 engage thing was a know issues and gm changed the part sometime after my model year. I should have just went to the junkyard and got the climate control thing myself. Brake lines well we see a lot of salt up here so its not uncommon.

The one that my buddy is selling is just a two wheel drive. I overheard somebody say one time, that 4x4's are little more $ to insure. I wouldn't know for sure though, as this would only be my second car...

Yeah i have heard that also. With it having to something with a higher liability with 4x4. Aka they can do greater damage or something like that.

These trucks are bone simple to work on, parts are cheap and plentiful, and if maintained the engines last a long time.

FWIW I drive passively. I don't hypermile or do any crazy stuff, just accelerate and brake smoothly, don't hot dog, etc. I have the TBI 5.0 liter in mine which is a less efficient injection system and my truck is 2wd with a 3.42 axle and I get 17-18 around down and 20-22 on the highway.

great old truck. A good choice.

We are long time Silverado owners, still have a 93 with over 250k miles on all original drivetrain.

We call them "cheep to keep".

And FWIW, a lease payment on a shoebox econo car can buy a LOT of fuel!

3300 bucks, can you pay cash for it? If so, do it! 160 thousand miles on those things are nothing. My a good bud of mine has one with almost 300 thousand on it. What a great truck!

I've got an update:

After negotiations, he is going to let it go for $2800. I will be paying cash. We are just ironing out a few things before we finalize the deal...can't claim victory yet, but very close.

I'm also going to have my mechanic come with me for one last check over of the truck.

The first bit of "repair" work I will do to the truck, is to replace the orange can of death that's on there right now. I was thinking about filling her up with some Maxlife too.

If you want a truck, this sounds like a winner. Always nice to know the history of the vehicle you are buying and trust you are getting what you think you are.

As others have stated, with so many of these on the road, parts are relatively cheap and plentiful and they are easy to maintain.

Nice truck. After reading this, I would expect you could get at least 250,000 miles until you have to get into the motor. But I would change the anti freeze in it for sure. Some of those has faulty gaskets and some guys blame the anti freeze is old. But I think it is just the gaskets were no good from the start (they have real thin spots around the intakes that blow out over time). Anyway those gaskets are not hard to change yourself on a Saturday afternoon and not too expensive. I have done those twice for friends. But you should pay close attention to the atf in the transmission and the filter. If I am not mistaken that truck should have the 4L60e trans and it takes Dexron fluid. But if your buddy had never changed the filter you need to get that thing out of there because that trans will last a very long time as long as the oil is clean and the filter is clean.

watch the cup holder that pulls out. The plastic can get brittle when its is below freezing. I say this from experience of breaking the part that swings out. One cold morning when I was pulling it.

The crazy thing is you can't find a truck up here that looks that good at that age. The salt just starts getting to them by then.

Nice buy for $2800. You got lucky - you got one of the few that isn't ragged to death.

Maxlife 5w30 should work well in that motor.

Very nice! Get that dex-cool out of there, this one has faulty gaskets and this truck will give you many years of driving!
