Hi, all.
Say, my brother has a Corvette with a 427 4 speed that doesn't get driven very much. It has a Comp Cams Magnum hydraulic flat tappet cam with moderate seat pressure but pretty fast ramps. If memory serves, it has 130 or 135 pounds on the seat. Remember, it's a BBC and that ain't that much. Still, many BBC's have cam problems - due in part to the 1.7:1 rocker ratio. No cam failure on this one... not yet. That's the oil topic here:
So it gets low mileage (less than 3000)/high months (6 mo?) OCI's with conventional oil.
Recognizing that ZDDP isn't the "do all"/"end all" answer to flat tappet wear (but isn't a totally bad one!), I'd like to be able to recommend a medium to high ZDDP conventional oil for this. I think he's using Wix filters right now and I'd encourage continuing this or Purolator Pure 1's - either one.
While we live in a cold climate here in Colorado, it would be correct to say that this car rarely (almost never) gets driven in cold weather. And, it's in a heated garage as you might have guessed.
So what oil? Does anyone know the ZDDP level of Rotella 15w40? Brands and weights would be appreciated - especially if you know the ZDDP level.
Anyway, it's a fairly fast car. Like - suck the air outta' your lungs. Well, that may be exaggeration at 6000 feet of elevation (Colo Spgs is where he lives), but it gets on down the road fast enough to shut up most people for a good long while. Roughly the 5th fastest car I've been in, but then I'm an ex bracket racer and know that nitrous ain't just for dental fillings! As typical, the 'Vette seems faster as a passenger, no doubt.
Well, thanks in advance.
