Blackstone comments: No problems showed up in this sample of Virgin Havoline 10W30 engine oil. This is a common additive package and should do well in about any type of engine. The TBN read at 8.1. We don't consider the TBN to be a problem until it starts to read at 1.0 or lower. The trace of insolubles and 1 ppm iron are nothing to worry about. These are both common finds in virgin oils.

My comments: Light amber color, no solids visible when holding sample bottle up to the light. Data on bottom of bottle shows that it was probably bottled around late July, early August of 2003. This should provide a good comparison to the Chevron VOA we have on file for about that same time period

This is pretty identical with the Chevron Supreme 10W30 VOA.

Let's compare this to the Super Tech 5W30 VOA

Copper 0
iron 0
Chrome 0
Sodium 0
Boron 0
Alum 1
Moly 55
Phos 1122
Zinc 1090
Mag 4
Calcium 1934

Viscosity cst 10.50
SAE/30W

It has been said that this oil has a weak additive package. It looks pretty comparible and better in some cases opposed to Chevron/Havoline.

After looking at some of the uoa's of the cheap Supertech oil, it's my opinion that though there may be minuscule differences in viscosities and additive packages, SL rated dino oil is SL rated dino oil. It is very unlikely that anyone would get longer engine life by switching from Supertech to Havoline or Mobil to Chevron. I really don't think your engine gives a hoot as long as it is on a reasonable OCI.

Gary, I think if you take those two oils and run them in a moderately driven car in a mild climate, you'd see similar results, but where I think the difference lies is in more extreme conditions.

Having the better additive package could mean that those who drive harder or live in slightly less perfect climates, will have that little bit extra protection.
