I was looking at getting some the new Chevron CJ-4 mix of Ursa Super Plus EC 15w40. I did some looking around for information on it and found it only has a TBN of 8. That seems kind of low and wonder if it work well with extended drains.

TBN simply is not nearly as important as it used to be for on-road diesel vehicles. The ULSD fuel is MUCH better in terms of less acid production.

In many used oil analysis, you can still see CJ-4 oils posting up TBN in the 4+ range even after 8-10k miles, as long as it's paired up with ULSD.

And considering that most people OCI way before it's time to do so, the TBN is kind of moot in most applications anyway.

I would use that lube, or any decent brand name oil today, with no reservations whatsoever for a "normal" OCI, and never give it a second thought.
