Bear with me guys but I'm new to your board.

What brings me here is a search for side by side performance tests of Chevron and Texaco oils. Of course most of thiose test will include Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Valvoline among others.

I looked around the board but didn't see anything like that.

My Chevron dealer told me the other day that they might be switching to Texaco since it has much better name recognition in Pennsylvania than Chevron.

I wrote to Chevron/Texaco and they did explain that both oils were formulated differently and Texaco has a more robust additive package.

I have had good results with Chevron and am happy with it but if my bulk supplier is switching then it looks like I will be too.

Can you guys steer me in a direction to find such a performance test?

Well we don't have any used oil analysis yet of the Havoline GF-4 yet. We have a VOA here: Havline 5w30 it does seem to have a very good additive package. Stay tuned..we'll get a better idea in the coming months. I plan on using the Havoline.

Can you post Chevron/Texaco's reply? Other members have put the same question to them and were told that both oils were nearly identical. They look, smell, and taste similar.

From the stores which carry both Chevron and Havoline, the Havoline seems to cost more. So I would think that it's positioned as the better one.

That's a beefy GF-4 oil there!

Either the analysis is wrong or its not Havoline..

"Ph 911
Z 1100"

Its not possible for SM oil to have these numbers. And I doubt the Moly=374 number

Looks like a few quarts of Redline slipped in here.

The product data sheets for Havoline & Supreme have always been mirror images for viscosity, VI index, flash & pour points, and ash, with the exception of TBN.

For GF-4 5w30’s, Supreme is 7.4 and Havoline is 7.6 TBN. The 10w30’s both have a 7.6 TBN.

Hard to understand how the add pack in Havoline could be "more robust" as this Chevron dealer is claiming!

You asked for their reply and although it's brief here it is:

Thank you for your inquiry. The Chevron Supreme and the Texaco Havoline oils have different formulations but should both give comparable performance. The Texaco Havoline formulation has a slightly more robust additive package.

Thanks Jeff, it's always good to see the reply straight from the horse's mouth. I agree with nelsonlwn, Havoline has it going on. There are oils that look good on paper, and then there are oils that really do perform well on used oil analysis, and we tend to overlook them because they don't cost big $$$$, or they don't have exotic basestocks or additives that we can see. Havoline is a sleeper.

Actually the Moly is a lot higher in the recent batches, but yes the Phosphorus and Zinc do seem high.

Just to follow up here as I don't have time to go through and type in the oil sample numbers tonight, bed time ya know.

Give me another day or so and I'll try to post the numbers when I switched my 01 302 Explorer from the 5w-20 Motorcraft the dealer put in when we bought it to the 10w30 Chevron Supreme I have in it now. Then you will see why I really have a soft spot for Chevron. That test is why if my oil supplier switches it's got me wondering.

Jeff - The Havoline is one of the best kept secrets in Motor Oil. The used oil analysis and VOAs on thhis forum make you question why use a synthetic over Havoline dino.....especially if you use 5K OCI or less (look at the UOA page....even the syn users seldom go over 5K).

Personal experience in my 04 Suburban is that my engine likes the Havoline better..it runs smoother, quieter, and gets better gas mileage. This is compared to Pennzoil and Quaker State. I also had a 2002 Suburban and Havoline ran better in that vehicle than Pennzoil OR Mobil 1. In fact the Mobil 1 was very disappointing in that the engine noise became unbearable, oil consumption went up ( over 3 oil chnage intervals consecutive with Mobil 1) and the gas mileage did not improve over dino. I will have a VOA on the Havoline 5w30 from my 04 Suburban in another 800 miles.

Here you go guys. I bought this 01 Explorer a little over a year ago. It had a fresh oil change in it from the Ford dealer. I will assume it was 5w-20 Motorcraft oil. I sampled the Motorcraft when I switched it over to 10w30 Chveron Sumpreme. These numbers are what lead me to ask the questions about Texaco vs Chevron, if my supplier changes brands.

3500 miles on oil. Cleveland Tech Center did the test.

Sorry about the way the numbers are laid out.I don't know how to make theis gadget post it in columns like I wanted.

As you can see with wear metal numbers like these it gives me good cause to want to stick with Chevron.

Some great UOA numbers on that Explorer! Your problem is not the minor differences in the Chevron & Havoline formulations, but rather the transition from API SL to SM.

Take a look at the Recent UOA posted by mikemc. It's also a comparison of SM Chevron 5w30 (left column) vs. SL Havoline 10w30 (right column).

Note the drop in Calcium & the jump in Moly to the 200+ level.

For use in your 01 Explorer, I'd suggest, while it's still available, putting away a stash - couple of cases - of the previous SL grade, of either Chevron or Havoline 10w30.

Recently I read a blurb from Chevron/Texaco where they said that they considered Texaco an "internal customer." I guess this means that the folks who brew Havoline choose their own blend.

"Havoline is one of the best kept secrets in motor oil."

Actually, Chevron is. They advertise less than any brand I can think of ... that's why their (excellent) oil is so cheap ... if you can find it.

You have over 4 times as much silicone in the 5w20 sample. All this dirt in your engine is what elevated the wear numbers, not the different motor oils.

You are correct on the silicon numbers and I noticed that as well. Only thing I can think of for that is I must be a little more carefull in how I do oc's than the dealer.

I still have suspicions about 20 weight oil though. I just don't like it.
