Cherokee 4.0 w/ Maxlife and SLOB

Remember SM Maxlife has reduced zddp, but there is 300 ppm moly which sort of makes up for it, at least it seems that way to me. Anyway, I could sell you 16 bottles of the CD2 high mileage additive, but probaby don't want to add that to High Mileage oil. I may put it up for sale on the for sale forum here. I have too much additive.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not sure I want to add any more High Mileage additive to a vehicle that doesn't currently have any leaks or burn any oil. If I go with VOST am I better off to dump the whole bottle in or use about half? I don't wont to over due the additives.

Guess I need to rethink my 2000 Cherokee's Mobil 1 diet...I have considered Rotella T.

Well, VSOT is about 75 to 100 cSt and will raise your viscosity, which is not really a bad thing to a degree. Whole bottle probably raise it 2 cSt. Pricewise half a bottle would be a nice compromise.

I am watching this thread with added interest. I have heard of many of these motors using older grades of oil - without additives - and people still making it to 200K or more before something else kills the Jeep (rust, transmission, etc). So I wonder, why the extra effort? 400K?

The 4.0 is often mentioned in discussions about the best motors ever assembled, and I always assumed that wasn't qualified by 'as long as you use ________'. So what's up?

Most of those high mileage examples were achieved using Pre-SM oil. I'm not saying SM rated oil will the engine faster, but I'm just wondering how the reduced ZDDP levels will affect the flat tappet cam in the long term. It may not at all, but I'd rather be safe than sorry as long as its not too much trouble or cost.

Check this out . Saw it for $2 a bottle at the Dollar Store. Says extra antiwear additives and it is very thing, won't raise your viscosity.

I'm worried about putting a stop leak agent in a tight engine that has no leaks or any need for it. I'm just not sure about the whole idea....

Ok, here's a new one: Mobil 1 High Mileage
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/NAXXENPVLMOMobil_1_High_Mileage_Oil.asp
It meets API SL instead of the newer SM, and it says it contains "Extra anti-wear additive" which might be ZDDP. Its also a bit thicker, rating at 11.79 cSt @ 100ºC instead of 10.0 like normal Mobil 1 10w30. Do you think this add viscosity would be enough to prevent the usual high Fe numbers we see here when Mobil 1 is used on 4.0s? And would this stuff have enough ZDDP to make it worth it? This is all assuming I can find a local retailer that carries it.

The more and more I read the more I think a SL rated oil would be good. I read somewhere on here where Mobil said that Mobil 1 High Mileage contains 1000ppm Ph, which I think should be adequate for a stock cam. Its -54 degrees pour point makes me believe that it might contain more PAO than regular M1 and it is a higher viscosity, which is a good thing for my application. Any thoughts? Murray's didn't have it, but I'm hoping Wal-Mart does.

looks like your on to something. Mobil 1 High Mileage is probably good for your application. ask around or do a search about a VOA for this oil. i'm sure there's one around here somewhere.

So how much SLOB should be added to my 4.0, when using Castrol GTX 10w30?

1 oz per quart, 1/2 bottle, full bottle???

Depends.

If you have 5 qt sump and SM oil, a whole bottle in place of half a quart will yield a 400 ppm increase in zinc. If you are shooting for SL level zddp, then half a bottle SLOB will do it.

Assuming 800 ppm zinc in SM (some are less) and 1000 ppm zinc in SL,
WHOLE BOTTLE SLOB ZINC INCREASES
5 qt and SM: 400 PPM
5 qt and SL: 380 ppm
6 qt and SM: 333 ppm
6 qt and SL: 317 ppm

I have searched, I don't believe any VOA or UOA exist yet for this oil. But I have seen many people comment at the typical properties of the oil and everyone seems to think that it actually might be a decent oil. I'm anxious to see a VOA/UOA on it though.
