Cheap all around drill......this one?

It will do you very well for general use. A good price, and no cord to drag around. And if you need to use it outdoors, or take it somewhere to help someone out you don't have to depend upon an electrical outlet just to use it or cart around extension cords.

I could counter that a cheap cordless model will either lack the power needed for heavier jobs, or the battery will be dead (or hold minimal charge) when you need it the most.

Corded models of course have the requirement of 120v. However, it's a compromise I'll gladly accept for homeowner usage in this price bracket.

Have two old "wards" branded ones for that...one is creeping up on 40 years old...

Planning to fix a little bit of wood on my deck, so cordless would be nice for that...

I know you can rebuild batteries cheaply but i just send them to Battery Pack Rebuilders . com and he does a good job fast and stands behind them. Cost is usually half or less than a new battery

Might it run off the/a car/motorcycle battery?

Voltage isn't THAT much more than the 12V available (More when the engine is running and its charging).

craftsmen battery tools are below minimum standard junk. go dwalt or makita.

Buy a Milwaukee M12,once you get the battery and charger, you'll want to buy some of the other 50 tools that use the same system.....

Okay, I own a Milwaukee 18V Fuel, so some people might think I'm bashing Ridgid, but I'm not. All I'm saying is that there is a lot of red tape with the Ridgid lifetime warranty. Everything has to be registered and the receipts have to be kept, including the replacement batteries. I've also heard (by co-workers, not by me) that things have to be carried into the service centers, not mailed, and that not every Home Depot is a registered service center.
Just check it all out first before writing the check.

That's a good price. I use my impact drivers much more than the drills, came in the sets. The impact is so much better for screws than a drill. Porter Cable 20v model has been very good, well designed, but the Ridged has the warranty which means everything if you want to save money long term. I got a set of each now over a few years, circ saw, recip saw, light, two drills, don't regret spending the extra. Corded are nice too, but nothing like cordless for ease of use. The cordless ones I have are stronger than me.

I have the same drill. Other than the excellent impact wrench, I'm not loving selection of C3 tools compared to the Milwaukee line. But it's a nice drill and worth the money.

The black Friday deal I got a couple years ago came with the drill, impact wrench, and flash light and 2 small and 1 large battery. I have a corded hammer drill from HF that rocks. Only break that out for big jobs. The cordless works on 99% of the stuff I need to do and it's very convenient.
