Chaser VS Tap!

Unless it is an oversize or wrong spec tap why would it remove more material? If I tap a new hole hole today with a standard M6x1 tap and run the same tap down it a year from now it is not going to remove any more of the base material only any corrosion or junk in the threads.
You must insure you do not use oversize taps.

Theoretically yes, but taps never engage the threads in exactly the same manner as the existing ones, so you will always remove some amount of material.

Its good for the young kids to know. I certainly didn't have a clue when I "chased" some threads with a tap. Unbeknownst to me, I crossed threaded the tap. Got a little difficult to turn so I gave it some Umph! Viola! Stripped threads and ended up with a blind threadless hole! Wasn't really important anyway. I was able to attach the starter using one bolt and a dress belt on the exhaust manifold. :)
