changing trans, transfer case, rear and front diff.

hiya guys. well what can i say. i need your help again.

in the next couple of weeks, my son and i are going to try to change the trans fluid, transfer case, rear and front diff. here's the specs for the SUV.
i have a 1997 nissan pathy V6 3.3L 4x4, 154k miles. my questions are the ff.
1. does the trans also have a filter just like the engine?
2. if it does, do you recommend changing it?
3. what type of fluid should i use? does mobil 1 have trans fluid? pls. give some other suggestions. i use mobil 1 10w30 synthetic for my engine. ill stop right here. thanks a bunch guys.

I don't know if that particular vehicle has a transmission filter or not. Most Nissans (and Infinitis) that I'm familiar with have a screen instead of a filter.

Before I recommend any particular fluids, I have to ask: when was the last time (mileage wise) that you changed your transmission fluid? If the answer is "it's never been changed to my knowledge,' then I'd delay the transmission fluid change until more knowledgeable members chime in with their opinions.

As for fluids, what does your owner's manual call for?

Mobil 1 makes a full synthetic ATF and is easily found at most AutoZones and Advance Auto Parts. I've used it with zero problems. I would recommend Molakule's "AutoGlide" ATF over the M-1. Check out his products at www.specialtyformulations.com I would also recommend Amsoil's full synthetic ATF.

As for gear lube for the transfer case and diffs, M-1 does make a 75w90 GL-5 gear lube, but again, I would check out Specialty Formulations gear lubes or try Amsoil's Severe Gear.

thanks for your input and honesty. to be quite honest i am not sure when the trans fluids have been changed. my son said he pulled the dipstick out and the fluid still looked pink. in the haynes book, it suggested to pull out the dipstick and smell it. if it smelled burnt, then change the fluid. we dont even know what a burnt transmission fluid smell like? but with the truck having 154k miles, we were thinking to might as well change it. im not sure if this is a good idea?

thanks for your response. i will go ahead and just wait it out until the others put in their suggestions. i am not sure whether the SUV's trans have been changed. we were just gonna change it for preventive maintenance.
