Bought a 2002 Explorer XLT from CarMax. Had 23k on it, now has almost 31k. I have a little over 3 quarts of RedLine 75w-90 diff fluid left over from a change in my Mustang, so I want to put it in the Explorer. I don't have an owner's manual, so I don't know if that is the correct weight to use, and since it's not a live axle setup, I would like some direction on how to change it, unless it's the same or similar procedure as with a live axle. Did a little searching online without success.

Thanks.

Found info online. I need 75w-140 for the rear diff. Manual said the diff fluid is good to 100-150k unless it gets submerged.

I am going to change the rear diff fluid to either Redline or Schaeffer's, whichever's easier to get. Should I add anything else to the oils? The diff's a limited slip type.

If it is a clutch disc type posi, then you need a fluid with friction modifiers, or you need to add a FM additive. I have no experience with those fluids, so I can't comment on them.

Redline and Schaeffers are both equally easy to get. You can order either from a sponsor on this site.
I have Schaeffers #267 80W90 in the rear of the Jeep.. 8.25 inch Chrysler Trac-Loc... Although the oil contains a friction modifier, I do get some noise. I plan to use one of the additives and see if that stops it.
The front of the Jeep has Redline, 75W140.

Depending on the fluid brand you purchase you may or may not need to add a friction modifier. I know Redline sells a gear oil with it already blended into the fluid.

If you use a fluid without the FM included, you'll need one 4oz bottle available at your local Ford store.
