I was using rotella 15w40 and just recently Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40. My motor has only 2700 miles and I noticed it consumed the most oil with the Mobil. I ended up switching to a lighter weight oil, 10w30, so the rings can seat a little better. Wow, the 10w30 really woke up my 1984 VW diesel N/A motor. My motor revs so much faster, it's great! Also, the oil I ended up using was Mobil Clean 5000, because it has a CF/CD rating. I bought it at Walmart but noticed on the back of the bottle label that nowhere did it include that CF/CD rating. This was noticed on the 1qt size bottles and the 5qt bottle. On Mobil's website it is stated that it is CF/CD rated. I called Mobil up to speak with a technician and he told me that the website is current and there hasn't been any formulation changes. He also had a bottle of the Mobil Clean 5000 in hand to state that the bottle had the CF/CD rating on the back. What I find weird is the bottles at Walmart fail to include these CF/CD ratings.

Even though it is CF/CD rated, remember that the soot handling capability is going to be lower than a diesel rated oil-the new Rotella T5 10W30 semi-synthetic would be a good way to go, too. The MC5000 will get the job done, but if your '84 VW is anything like my '82 Mercedes diesel-keep a close eye on your soot levels.

How do you check your soot levels? Is it by looking at the dipstick? I am going to only run this oil for 1000miles, do you think the soot levels would be dangerous by then? I would love to run the T5 Rotella 10w30, but it is semi-synthetic, I want to run a conventional oil till the oil consumption stops. I live in San Jose,CA and I am having a hard time finding a diesel spec 10w30 motor oil. I know Shell has a 30wt Rotella T1 that I can get, but with winter approaching, I would like to use a multiweight. If you have any info on how to obtain a 10w30 diesel spec conventional oil, please chime in.

check any farm or impliment dealers, 10w30, although not as popular as 15w40, is widely used around the country.
if you cannot find it locally and its a must-grade you can always order online.

why the hesitation of using a semisyn?

I only have 2700 miles on the engine, so I am still breaking it in. It is consuming oil right now because it is still breaking in. I don't want to use a semi-synthetic because it might be too slick to use and it may stop the breaking in process. That is why I want to use a conventional till the oil consumption stops. I wanted to use a lighter weight oil to allow the piston rings to seat faster because I built my engine on the tight side!

Oil analysis is the best way to determine soot levels, there are mixed opinions on synthetic oil in new/rebuilt engines-I personally used Mobil 1 when breaking in a Buick 350 (years ago) & had good results-didn't mention your motor was new! If the '82 survives it's rookie driver, I'll be in that situation myself. The best thing about 10W30 diesel oil is the cold start/flow ability is MUCH greater than 15W40, along with the lessened flow restriction-did you see any MPG increase with the new oil?

Ya i agree stay with a CI-CJ oil.

Haven't noticed because I just changed the oil and I also have a 1/2 tank of fuel left. I am going to fill it up tomorrow but won't know for awhile because I get about 45mpg right now. I think it should go up because on the freeway, when I step on the accelerator, the car picks up speed faster than with the 15w40, which means less friction=less work=increased mpg. I am going to try the Motorcraft 10w30 diesel oil. The only place I could find that weight and brand was at the dealership. It is a whopping $7 a qt, ouch! Autozone carries the Motorcraft diesel oil but only in 15w40. I found that O-Reily's carried the 10w30 Motorcraft Diesel oil at a cheaper price, but the closet location was over 1hr away!

I also noticed the easier startups and quicker acceleration when I used 0-40 JD synthetic. I'm not a fan of 0w oil but tried it last winter when it was really cold and the engine cranked faster than it did during the summer, very noticable. It is supposed to cover all temp ranges but I used 15w 40 this summer when the temps were higher. I plan on using it again this winter.

Man-a closet an hour away-that's a BIG HOUSE! I ran that MC 10W30 once in my work 6.0 one winter when the Ford dealer changed my synthetic without my permission-it didn't flow cold much better than 15W40-if you live in an area of CA that doesn't get really cold, you could run anything you wanted in that VW-but if you have a Wal-Mart nearby & need some oil for cold weather-that Rotella T5 10W30 for $11.50/gallon would be hard to beat!
