My truck, in sig, has had a constant diet of syn oils since new. It's had M1, Syntec, SynPower, & PP during the first 108,000 miles. I have always done OC's based on the OLM. I was going about 7500 miles for a OCI depending on how much I towed. . In the last year or so, my driving habits have changed with alot more short trips, not much towing. My last couple of OC's have been in the 3-4000 mile range, and I just changed the oil Saturday and OCI was 3075 miles. I used some Quaker State Conventional with a Puro classic. I'm thinking that I'm just wasting money using syn at this time. I guess my question is, since this truck has seen nothing but syn for it's entire life, minus the FF, is going to a dino going to cause me any problems. The truck runs great, no mechanical issues, well I do have a power steering leak I need to address.

If you spent the money on synthetic for 8 years, why stop now? You could just bump your OCI back up to 5-6000 mile range
Going dino is not a problem but you did say short trips... but if you go by OLM I think you are fine.

That's kind of what I was thinking, maybe just change the filter and top off and reset the OLM.
What I should have done was save some oil for a used oil analysis, now it's contaminated with other oil.

Since the "syn" you have been using all along isnt really true synthetic anyhow, NP if you watch your OCI intervals. The big difference is the amount of Ca in the oil and % of group III (very fancy dino) v. Group II+ (Fancy dino) that allow extended OCI and a bit less VII. Syns are just Premium Oil. Unless you get specific Amsoil or Redline products.
No problems and your engine will last no matter what oil you use.
Personally with short trips I'd WANT to CHANGE the oil more often and get rid of the byproducts and moisture which WILL help the engine life.
I'd rather do short OCIs then long ones.

gen iii engines are very hard on oil so keep an eye on it
If your truck is a keeper you might want to add some Lube Guard power steering additive once you fix the leak. In northern Alaska where it gets seriously cold they had problems at one of the oil production sits with power steering noise and early failures. They started using this stuff and the problems went away and the p/s pumps last the life of the truck. Go to their web site for more information. I do not work for them, but they do make good stuff.

With the price of oil going up I went from $25.00 Pennzoil Ultra to $15.00 Pennzoil conventional.I've decided that there is no need for synthetic oil providing you change it every 5K OCI.Joe
I agree there is no need if the oil is sm or the newer sn the brand dont matter much if at all shop by price
OTOH, the difference in cost per mile is really small, even at full "oil change special" prices.
The more time I spend here, the more I question the need to use synthetic labeled oil in anything I own.
Still, when you can usually find a closeout deal or MIR on syn labeled oil, why not use it?
I wouldn't pay twice as much for a Grp III oil, but the actual cost after MIR, or on closeout, or with a special including a premium fiter is often only a couple of bucks for an oil change.
