I dropped the pan and changed 6 qts of atf and put a new filter in my 2000 Taurus. The filter felt loose when I put its neck in the proper hole. Now car shudders. I used Valvoline Mercon V. What did I do wrong??

maybe open the trans back up, and check to see if there was a gasket on the new filter.

If you are not getting a good seal it way be causing your tranny problems...
Kind of like eddie murphy in the 90's.....;)

Check your ATF level HOT, WITH vehicle running, ON a perfectly level surface, while in park.

Did you torque the new filter? did you remove the old filters gasket/oring? did the filter come with a new o-ring?

Yes check fluid level.

Does a Taurus have an adaptive trans? If so, leave battery disconnected for a few hours. Then drive for 10-20 miles to re-teach the trans.

If mechanically everything is right, then suspect the fluid.

Is 6qts. the proper refill capacity. Not familiar with that trans so I don't know what it its. What I do know is I have never had to use more then 5 qts. on any trans that I have done before.

I have used the fluid you mentioned and it did not cause tourque shudder for me.

Filter neck should not be loose in the hole it goes up in! This will cause pump to suck air with the fluid (instead of fluid only) and you will have poor clutch engagement, slipping, shudders, etc. Think about when you have air in the brake system, another hydraulic system, similar in some ways to the clutches applying in a transmission. The brakes only halfway stop the car when there's air in the system. In a transmission, the clutches and bands will only partialy apply, causing slippage and eventually burnt clutch plates/bands/drums, not to mention the damage to your pump. Stop driving until you can pull pan back down and see what's missing on that filter neck! It should have some type of o-ring or metal-ringed seal that goes up into the filter neck hole to provide a very tight/snug fit/seal. If you did not put the new seal on the new filter before you put it up in place, then it is loose in there and needs that done before you ruin the transmission.
Seen this situation several times before when a novice tried to change their own fluid without some guidance the first time or two.

Consider that if you have to drop the pan to re-do the filter, you will lose some fluid, but that after running it the new fluid has mixed with the old that didn't come out. Your tranny probably holds about 10 qts total. So when you refill the second time you will be much closer to having all new fluid. Not a bad result at all.

Bingo, you have the answer. The seal between the filter neck and the hole was not tight. The transmission must be sucking air. I will need a rubber o-ring or something to make a tight seal. Perhaps an o-ring something came out when I pulled out the old filter. Thanks.

The fiter kit should always come with a new seal (special design)
Don't use a regular o ring. If the filter kit did not come with a seal tell the parts store you want one.

If you have to buy a new kit. Your trans will thank you.
I have a 98 AX4N. The old seals are not the easiest things to remove sometimes.

But the seal is critical. I used that fluid before Amsoil came out with Mercon V spec and I had no problem. So the fluid should not cause any problem.

When you pulled out the old filter, did you also dig out the old gasket from the hole? The old gasket usually stays up in there and you MUST remove it in order for the new filter (with it's attached gasket) to go up there and fit properly. To remove the old gasket you must NOT scratch the inside of the hole, use the nose end of a 3/8" extension. Get the old gasket out then the new filter will then fit in snugly.

Been there done that.

Yep, getting the old gasket out is a bear; a gasket removal tool may be helpful. Make sure the filter is pressed in firmly and squarely. Good luck. If the mechanical fix does not work you might try some LubeGard Automatic Transmission Protectant. It has the reputation that it will fix AT shudders.

Your situation my be very similar to what I show in these pictures.

This is on my '96 3.8L windstar, that uses the same basic transmission.
If you look through the pictures, you will find a series that I took while doing a fluid exchange on my transmission, including the filter change.

I posted a couple of detailed pictures of that filter gasket that sticks in there......and how to remove it.

Thank you all for your help. I went back into the trans pan and the filter was loose. I used a drop light and saw a piece of the old gasket was still stuck up in the hole. I took it out, the new filter neck went in nice and snug. Put the pan back, added 6 quarts of new Mercon V. The car drives fine. I checked the fluid and I need another 1/2 quart. The above pictures are great. Thank you all.

Yes, 6 qts is right. I bought 5 qts for my dad and it was short by 1 when we did the change.
