True for engine oils, but I've seen no evidence that cold weather affects gear and transmission oils as much as it does engine oils.
Fair enough, it might not be as much, however I would guess that in a cold climate the same rule would apply, just to a lesser extent as you have pointed out. For my money, I'd rather change after winter than before winter.
