Change by months or by miles?

To me personally, 3-month or 700-mile OCI would be a waste, but I guess each engine and circumstance is different so you should do a UOA to see where you stand.

ok, i drive a 95 plymouth neon. My car book says, to change oil at 6 months/7,500 miles...3 months/3,000 miles, and IF it falls under sever service, constant idling, towing/trucking, taxiing, hot/humid conditions, extreme cold, dusty conditions..then to change th oil more frequently..
I fall DEF under constatn idling(bumber to bumper traffic), hot/humid conditions through summer months. I realize this was in 1995, and that was what? SJ oil?

My mom doesn't drive that much anymore so I take her Crown Vic in to Ford every 6 months...Her driving is all local driving but I take it out once in awhile on the interstate...By 6 months the tires need air anyway.

As for traffic, it just sucks here..our lcoal I 95 highway is always at a crawl, its literally driving 8 miles to work, as if it was los angeles, move, creep, brake, ect ect
Could or would this constitute for a 3 month change? I remember garry allen? I think it was once saying, he had a terrible oil analysis, and taht convinced him to stay at 3 months.. Im not sure if it was garry allen.but it was someone here.

Look up severe service in your OM, and follow that suggestion. Odds are it will be months before miles in severe service intervals.

Drove a neighbour's Yaris the other day.

The car has less than 5,000km on it, and is up to it's 60,000km service due to time.

My E-30 gets an oil change when it reaches the "fill" mark for the second time...odo is dead.

Ford recommended 5,000 miles or 3 months for my MY2002 Mustang. I went every 6 months and they never had a problem with it. Ask your servicing dealer. They will be the ones you'd have to deal with if something were to happen. Most of them are all different as far as what they think should be done when, as least from what I've noticed.

I still change my oil every 3 months regardless of miles. I have changed it with less than 1000 miles on the oil but it was all 1 or 2 mile trips in winter with lots of idling. My mothers 03 Ford escape OM calls for a 3 month 3000 mile OCI and I change it every 3 months with 1200-1500 miles of all short trips. This may be overkill but it makes me sleep well at night.

Well, i ddi do an oil change yesterday..wish i was able to take pics. 3 months ago, i used Quaker state synthetic(the old bottles i bought last year). and a mopar oil filte, i bought at the dealer 5 years ago. SO! I was amazed, nonetheless, it was blackish, but yuo could still see some of that golden color in the oil..most other dino oils ive used, it comes out thickish and blacker than black at this point. I hacked the mopar fitler open, and noticed it was VERY well built..it had a way better abdv vavle than any aftermarket filter ive hacked open. My point is, Mopar oil filters get a bad rap. The media was much thinner, but had more paper fiins than others. And...the fitler media was barely even black Ive noticed with most aftermarket filters, the media is black..This mopar filter was ust turning black. I found it interesting..
Think i could have used that mopar filter for a good 6 or 9 months? It wa VERY strong media, had a hard time prynig the media off the filter with a large oversized screwdriver.

You are following the severe service main't schedule for your vehicle. That is a smart thing to do, if you want to extend your OCI, then have a UOA done at the next OC and see exactly how the oil is holding up. You might be able to extend the interval, but I would suggest verification with a UOA before extending the interval. JMO

To the OP:
Is your mazda the 2.3 or 2.0 model?

Because if it is the 2.3 model, you better follow the severe schedule and save all you receipts. These engines have a plastic oil filter cartridge housing that, when over-torqued, can develop a small crack.

Visit Mazda 3 forums, there are quite a number of cases where the engine was toast because all oil was gone due to cracked filter housing and Mazda still gave them a run around before putting a new engine in under warranty.

If you plan to do your own OCI I would not worry so much, but would still save all receipts.

These engines ar very easy on oil, and even though the cracked housing is not oil related, the dealership will most likely still request all receipts.

I am not trying to scare you, I just don't want a fellow BITOG'er have some nasty surprises, like some of the guys at Mazda 3 Forums, that's all :)
