for my neon, i am doing my OCI @ 6mo/5k mi.
I'm a short tripper, only living 5 mi from work.
I'm currently 2756 mi since my last change, 6 mo will be 10/04.
I'll probably put another 650 mi on between now and 10/04, which would take me to 3409 on this oil and filter.

I start vacation on that day(10/04) and will drive to Dallas,1100mi, where the car will sit for a week, and then i'll drive the same 1100mi home.

so short version of the question, If the Beginning of a trip is @ the Date, and the end of the trip will have you near(probably a little over) the miles, change before or after?

what's coming out is what's listed in my sig, been in since 04/04.
what's going in would be there until april, and using my stash oldest to newest, it's time for the MS5k, and for a filter i can go PureOne, Mobil 1 EP, Wix,Bosch, or Mopar(wix with Nitrile ADBV vs Silicone.) I even have an FL-400s.
leaning toward either M1 filter or PureOne.

Take it on the trip, and then don't change it when you get back. It will probably last much longer with that nice highway run taking care off all your condensation.

I realize the car won't explode if i go past 5k/6mo, but as it takes me 6 mo to hit 3k normally, it makes me feel better to do it then. (also doing spring and fall, i am far less likely to have to change the oil on a snow covered, frozen/dripping car/driveway)

you want me to go fully off the res. when it comes to the owner's manual!
it calls for the old 3k/3mo for my style of driving, 5k/6mo for mostly highway, and even says "Under no circumstances to exceed 6 mo."
I think the next oldest i have is meijer Full syn, that one i may take to a year...unless i get really bored...

6 months / 1 year, not much difference to an API SN, especially on that n/a 4 banger.

UOA it after the trip if you don't believe me and you will see how much TBN you have left.

7.5k/1 year is more typical.

Before buying that M1 filter I suggest looking at the filter comparo posted recently. Unless you like paying a premium price for less than average filtration.
The puro fared well though.

Change it when you get back, it will be fine - you'll have the warm fuzzy feeling of helping the environment by not throwing away good oil. My son had an '02 Neon with 150k using the cheapest Purolator at Walmart and a 10k OCI with M1. It would still be running if not for a tractor trailer driver dozing off and side swiping him. He was fine, but the car wasn't worth repairing.

The oil is far more important than the filter. Any decent filter and M1 combo will work well for you, but wait until you return before changing.

umm I'm not BUYING anything. the filters i have listed are already in my stash.
I honestly have more than a lifetime supply of oil filters for this car.
which is fine, cuz my dad's lawnmower uses the same one.
that M1 filter has been sitting on my shelf for a couple years. the main reason i was thinking of using it now was simply, mobil oil, mobil filter, why not.

I run conventional ~5k irrespective of length of time and unless a long trip puts me way over (say an extra 3k), I change the oil when I get back from the trip.

I figure as easy as highway miles are on the oil, it isn't going to do any damage, and then I'm running nice fresh oil when back into the daily grind of short trips.

Sorry tig, i've not drunk the M1 kool-aid yet. the oil i'm gonna use is MS5k, the FILTER i may use is an M1-102.

yeah, my brother, whom i bought this car from, goes 7k on conv. irrespective of time.
His Mustang('06 GT - which replaced this neon) does around 50hwy miles/day on his commute.
His Dakota('07 4.7HO 4x4 Quad cab), sits for months on end, only driven when:
- he needs to haul something
- weather prohibits mustang
- mustang broken
- folks visiting from out of town (not trying to squeeze either of out 67 yr old parents into the backseat of a 'stang.)

when he changed it (dakota) last oct.(ms5k, mopar filter) it had easily been 2-3 years.

Early.....(unless I've missed something)....

You've not mentioned whether you have to add any oil during an OCI.
You haven't mentioned whether your car consumes more oil during extended/constant highway miles at high speeds.

If you don't have the answer to these questions (changing oil every 3k miles might not give you time/miles to determine this....), take a quart with you and check the oil level at the destination and add any if at "L" on the dipstick, and change when you return for winter...

That seems the easiest answer/advice to give to a question without more information...

on this same vacation last year, i changed it while on the trip(in my Brother's driveway), still @ the full mark after the 1100mi drive home.

Well then, you've answered your questions....and everyone here at least agrees that your oil will EASILY remain viable for 5-7k miles...I'm sure you've read that so you're "good-to-go"....
