Can anyone tell me when chainsaw engines went pointles, I am garage/yard/estate sale shopping for used chainsaw and my buddy found a Homelite which I am partial to but I already have two Super EZ's in the garage which are boat anchors due to lack of working points, Homelite says the points are no longer available and no NOS parts. I don't want the same thing to happen again so can anyone tell me around or exactly what year saws went pointless.

I thought their was a point-less conversion on the open market. I rember another mechanic that had put what he called an "HEI" in his old chainsay since the points where no longer avilable. It was not HEI in the sense it was not a GM product but it was understood that it was pointless conversion! That was about 8 years ago.

I think most went pointless in the mid 1980's or thereabouts. I use a small EZE-LAP® diamond whetstone/knife sharpener to "file" points. I ran the same set of points in a VW Bug for over 50,000 miles using this method. As long as there is ANY contact material left they clean up quite nicely.
