Wednesday afternoon the wife and I went to see a movie, something we don't do very often. Lots of young folks there and at least 9 out of 10 of them were walking around in the lobby like zombies staring at their electronic device, pretty oblivious to the rest of the world...which was okay with me. What wasn't okay was that when the lights dimmed inside the theatre the place was lit up like the sky on a clear night! There was at least a couple of dozen of these on all of the nearly 3 hours. As we were walking out,the zombies ambled on out, steadily looking at their little screens. I know I'm getting old, but what the heck is so important? Also, the gadgets are apparently a new fashion statement, because I noticed lots of different loud colors...and they have to be held in the hand at all times, no pockets or holsters.

After the movie, on to the mexican restaurant. Again, a bunch of kids and adults sitting at the tables staring at their devices. One couple actually acted annoyed when they had to look up to give the waiter an order. Their two little boys were going bonkers and disturbing the rest of the place, but the parents were not interested. When their food arrived, they did actually lay their gizmo down beside their plates and try to eat while fiddling with the buttons.

Is the whole world going crazy, or is something wrong with me? Yes I own a cell phone (5 years old), but it only gets my attention about twice a day. Is this a passing fad? Why the need for constant communication? What is all this leading to? Is it good or bad? Seems mostly bad to me. What do most of y'all make of it?

I want one! That would be handy at the movies!

I hear ya!

Seems everyone has to have a cell phone and the ones you speak of that are on them all the time, in places like a theater, restaurant or even church.....have no respect for their fellow man.
Sadly, most kids are not taught the meaning of that word...respect!

True. A friend who is the assistant warden at the local state prison says they are not allowed to block, even though cell phones are constantly smuggled in and cause all sorts of problems. Can't imagine any legitimate objection to blocking within prison walls.

Zombies! That's what they've turned in to!!!!!!!

I've been SCREAMING about this for many years!

They cannot say Hi anymore!

They'll (or are) develop Diabetes at alarming rates!

They'll (or are) develop back & neck problems!

They'll (or are) have early eyesight problems!

They'll (or are) socially inept!

FOOLS. Every one of them.

Even if I had one of the fancy phones I would not be a zombie. I don't even like talking on the phone. The main reason I even have one is my Daughter insists upon having one. She has no land phone.

I agree that it's getting pretty out of hand......

Cell phones aren't the problem, people are.

When I saw this I had to restate:
Possible future ad from the Nation Cell Phone Association - Cell phones don't text, people do!

I'm pushing 50 and don't get the whole hand-tech thing either and until early this week attributed it to age. Then I had lunch with two guys from a community organization I work with. One is in his late 30s the other is close to my age.

Although we were able to have a pleasant lunch conversation, when they were not the ones talking - you guessed it, they were holding/using their mobile devices. Later that evening when I checked my FB account, there was a post from earlier in the day from one of the guys - "having lunch at...with...and..." I really wonder how many people gives a rats toot about where he had lunch and who he was with.

I have a TracFone and keep it turned off most of the time.

The real concern I have is that young people are moving from being those who acquire and process information, to those who find information.

I do not really think they are zombies, but just into a whole different reality. They like to feel constantly connected.

Can anyone remember what life was like before cell phones?

What would a lot of folks do without them now?

I have one because we don't have a land line anymore and it's a basic phone. If I need internet access, I use this old laptop I'm on.
However, I do enjoy the game "Teeter" on my wife's Droid.

I'm 22 and I don't get the phone thing. I have a beat to [censored] Nokia that's a few years old now and doesn't have any "smartphone" functions. It stills makes calls and texts fine, so I continue to use it. My friends are constantly ragging on the old Nokia, telling me to get a new phone, but I don't see the point in spending that much money on something that I don't see being that great of an asset.

I have a younger friend that gets every latest new phone. He pays an ungodly amount and for monthly service. Every time he calls, his phone locks up or won't work right.

I just keep laughing talking to him on my $30 a month straighttalk phone that works no matter what.

I told him I would buy a smart phone when it could change my tires or wipe for me.

Eventually they will grow up and mom and dad will not be paying for their Ipods, Droids, Cell Phones etc. When many can't get jobs to support these gadgets ....Thats about the only thing that will stop it.
