I was at the inlaws yesterday and for some reason my recently added Ruger LCP was brought up and the father inlaw wanted to see what that was. I safety checked it and passed it over and he blew a flipin gasket because I carry my CCW with a round chambered. And then I get drilled from the whole family about it. Are you kidding me? I was insulted and made out to look like a retard waiting to have it go off on myself. Anyway it got me to thinking on how other people carry their CCW. All my other friends and coworkers carry loaded but one and he has only been carrying for a week lol. The worst part of the matter is my wife who has never given a thought to my pistol being loaded now drills my [censored] about carrying one the chamber. I hate parents opinions rubbing off on their children. Like Fram oil filters.

A pistol doesn't do you much good if it isn't ready to go bang when you need it to. Pretty obvious. Also obvious, it will be really hard to go get a round in the chamber with one hand, should you need to be defending yourself while trying to draw.

I don't know anything about a Ruger LCP or its safety features, but I am completely comfortable with a Glock's safety features and condition zero/one carry in a proper holster.

Well the LCP does not have an external safety. It does have a really long heavy trigger pull. You have to really want to pull the trigger to get a shot in. So thats pretty safe. Anywho I also carry a few others mainly a Kel-Tec P11 (same as the LCP) and a Makarov which is one of the safest pistols ever made. So many safety features its amazing it came out of russia. Firing pin block, free floating firing pin (no chance of spring release), slide is locked when safety is engaged, hammer is decocked in safe, its just rediculous how safe this pistol is to carry and it wouldnt be good enough for the inlaws.

There is no point in carrying a CCW unless it is ready to go in an instant. If it's not ready to use, you may as well just lock it in a box for transport to the range...

On the other hand, given the reaction you received (from folks who clearly have no training), just bring a lockbox to their house and leave it unloaded, locked, and in the car.

You'll never convince them...

I have no intent to convince them. But being concealed carriers themselves Im utterly shocked. I was hoping the brother inlaw former marine would step in but he just wasnt in the room at the time. Luckily for me they havent had actual training so I dont care what they think. Being a former Army MP I think I can do whatever I feel is safe. Anytime I go to their home Im going to just not have one chambered, and make it well known that I carry it loaded anywhere else just to get under their skin. I love the inlaws but they question everything I do. HATE IT!

I carry my HK USP loaded. I dont have an external safety either. I deleted it when I converted it to LEM trigger.
An unloaded gun is about useless. Just throw it at them I guess?

For the most part thats all you can do. I tried to explain to my wife and she understands somewhat now. I asked her how fast she really thinks she can pull out the pistol from her purse and rack the slide in a panic. Guess what? Your dead before you even finished unzipping your purse. Good job.

Whoa...wait a minute, did I read you right? They are carrying concealed and they HAVEN'T had training? OMG...no wonder they're so far off...the thought that untrained people are carrying concealed worries me. The fact that they don't put a round in the chamber just shows that, deep down, they know they shouldn't be armed...they're not ready to actually use it...

As far as in-laws questioning everything you do? Yeah...that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish...

Good luck...

Amen - I have my USP compact loaded when I carry it. With the LEM trigger, there is no safety. If you can't go from carrying to round on target in a second or less, you're not ready for something to go wrong....

That said, if I were carrying a pistol with a safety, it would be on - for several reasons: 1. I can get it off during the draw as I come up to ready, 2. if I am in a struggle, and I lose control of the weapon, the moron may not know to flip it off and 3. lawyers (hate to say it...but it's a consideration).

Yeah, if you're not carrying with one in the hole, you might as well have left it home. People who think they're going to rack one in at the last second are watching too many movies.

In laws are fun, aren't they? My advice: smile and nod, then do exactly what you were doing before.

I'm not a 'gun person', but, at the same time, if you ARE going to carry a gun, it should be ready to use - seems pointless to go to the effort of having it otherwise.

I agree that in a life and death situation, 'fiddling' with a gun will just get you dead. Fast.

I'm Canadian, so one could argue that I don't have much to contribute to a concealed carry discussion. That said, even I have had some type of draw/gun handling training (mandatory license training and a 9 hour, one day IPSC course). Even with my comparatively "liberal", Canadian gun views I feel that it defies common sense to carry without a chambered round. Isn't that the whole purpose of carrying, to be prepared for any threat? Also... isn't it the overwhelming practice of police (all of whom I assume have had carry training) to carry with a round in the chamber?

You're doing the right thing by not having a chambered round at the in-law home. It's better to preserve daily, family harmony than be dogmatic over something you may never need. But, I still think you are logically more correct.

Oops didn't mean to echo Addguy, I guess we were ships passing in the night.

If its double action one in the pipe! If you have a holster for the lcp your are fine with it chambered. you don't want the trigger getting caught on anything in your pockets if its chambered!

My Polish P-64 has external safety (similar to that of Makarov pistols) so the round is chambered with the safety engaged at all times. My Czech CZ-82 does not have an active safety so it is not chambered unless it is ready to be fired. I could put it in double action mode but I still do not feel comfortable about it.

I would not have a pistol without an active safety feature with a round in the chamber. Things may happen and the chance of injury or loss of life to others is not worth the risk.

The key is to avoid placing yourself in situations when you might need to carry a loaded and unsafe gun. It's a better way to channel one's paranoia about the dangers in this world.

Maybe I'm missing something here........did you hand a loaded gun to someone else? I get that impression from your post because as soon as you passed it to the FIL, he goes off about having one in the chamber. If the above is correct, then you need to go back for some serious retraining. NEVER (as in the rest of eternity) do you hand a loaded gun to someone else so they can examine it. Pardon my French, but you weren't "made out out to look like a retard", you are one. At this stage of the game, you have no business having a CCW. I have no problem with carrying one in the chamber, but never would I hand the gun over to another person without first removing the clip and clearing the chamber. This is just crazy!

"I was at the inlaws yesterday "

It's their house, their rules. If they don't want you handing a weapon around with a chambered cartridge don't bring it in. Have some respect when you're a visitor in someone else's home. If there is a right or wrong on this (and there isn't, it's a philosophical argument) you're automatically wrong because you don't pay for the roof you're under.

Sounds like he did give a loaded gun that had the safety engaged. This is the only way to give a handgun to someone else (brand is for illustration purposes only):

My only addition to your post (pic) is that I would remove the clip.
