Cat vs. Raccoon

Even my 150lb dog has only brought home small raccoons, never an adult. Maybe they are too smart to stand their ground, and my dog isn't all that interested in messing with an adult.
Also if you shoot it with a.22, make sure you make a clean shot. A buddy tried bird shot at close range and it didn't work well at all.

I had a coon problem too until a coworker ( who cooks raccoons ) set me up with a trap. For weeks, nearly everyday, he'd come by to pick up the subject, "slip him out of his jacket" and then bring me the trap for another run. After a while the coons finally thinned out.
If the problem comes back, he's there in the back drop for me....

Man that sucks. We would be devastated if Winston was killed. Peace be with your family.

My first thought. Raccoons that don't leave are very likely to be rabid.

(Oh, and poor.kitty...found out the hard way there was a bigger kid on the block)

A female co worker in the refinery I worked in went to check an instrument at night and came upon an adult raccoon and her litter going through a garbage can looking for food that decided to attack her. Luckily their was a nearby light pole that she was able to scurry up and radio for help.
We laughed so hard seeing her up a pole as we drove up in our trucks, lights beaming and scared the raccoons away but she didn't think it was funny. Usually one will run but if its a group they can be testy.

That's a bummer Pablo. Hope your kitty cat is OK. We have a major raccoon population in my neighborhood. They are constantly on my bird feeders.

Remington 700 suppressed .300 blackout. Neighbors won't hear a thing.

Sorry to hear of the injuries to your cat. Raccoons are smart and can be fierce. I remember once running stadium stairs myself, and at the top of one set, tired and half hypnotized from the Starks, I ran into a mother and her babies. Not a pleasant sound and we both jumped about four feet in the air!

Personally I'd use a .22 garden gun with some small shot. Pepper em!

They are smart and are trying to get in, and so they may do so some day.

Makes me glad I left the glass storm door in this year instead of changing it out for the screen door. Too many feral cats were coming up to the door where the cat looks out during the evening. A few weeks ago she went bananas when something came to the door. I couldn't see what it was. Then a day or two later I see a medium sized raccoon right by the front door.

You'd be better off with the Remington. A .22 loaded with shot would either irritate it or temporarily convince it to move on - but it would be back. Coons are some serious tough customers.

I've seen raccoons kill dogs when I lived in Windsor. Those varmints were absolutely incredible when it came to intelligence.
I set up some rat traps in my backyard because we had some monster rats come out at night.
I'm asleep and awaken to the slap sound of the traps. I went outside and wanted to clear he traps. No need. The coons were eating the rats in the traps.
A few days prior a border collie went missing from a neighbours backyard. There were tufts of hair and blood. Looked like a mama and pups ripped the poor dog apart.
My roomie at the time ended up killing the largest one with a baseball bat. these things would crawl on the power lines, never touching the ground,so they were tough to get near.
The SPCA ended up setting up cages to trap them but they got wise really fast.

Thank you Pablo . She was only 7 , five weeks ago her behavior radically changed and she lost a lot of weight and all her strength. It was heartbreaking but she is not suffering anymore.

The muzzle of your Mark III shoved into a potato will suffice to keep the noise down and still remain accurate enough for 10' or so. Shove the muzzle in and then pull back about an inch....makes a one-use suppressor.

One of my wildest mornings was when I came outside at 4 AM to the sound of my old Red Tick Coonhound baying and going CRAZY at the side of the pool. A coon was in the skimmer housing!

I couldn't get at it, and rabies is always an issue, so I shot it. The dawg grabbed it the instant the gun went off and ran into the yard, there was a bit of commotion and then it was over.

Hellaciously vicious, coons can be very troublesome...

I hate the things. They have killed a few feral cats in my apartment complex. My cat doesn't go outside and I'm glad.

I got chased by one last year, in the daylight. Don't know how I did it, but I managed to get ON TOP of my Jeep when that thing was coming after me.

I hope Captain Meow recover soon. I admire his bravery and courage to defend his home. My friends has a cat that was raised like wild, tough cat, fought (and injured) many battles with coon, then one night the car didn't return, my buddy said the cat is still on patrol.

I hate raccoon, mostly because amount of clean up i had to do after they venture my property, as their feces are toxic.. my 3 years old like to touch and feel things, and taste it, these raccoon tool away lots of my time. my little girls used to like raccoon and admire their cute, til the gangs eated up all our fruit and vegetable in the back yard and they all get upset. they were starring and hissing at me when i tried to disperse, and end their pool side party 2am EST.
