Thank you for the links, time and research that you put into these posts!

I have 212,000 miles on my 2003 Ram and still have the original injectors. I am having difficulty with cold starts now and have had trouble for three winters now. I am okay if I keep the block heater plugged in.

I want to improve the fuel filtration system before I put new fuel injectors in. I am still using the OEM Fleetguard cartridge filters that the truck came with.

I think your truck came with the lift pump that is in the fuel tank?

I was considering putting the Fass system on the frame rail under the truck, but I like your setup much better.

Yes, tank has the pump.
I recently had a rough idle and some black smoke when hard accelerating. I have 170,000 miles.
I used Hot Shot EDT 1oz and 10 oz of Marine Seafoam in a half tank of diesel, (premixed together and poured in) and it cleaned the injectors cause the rough idle left and no more black smoke in like less than 100 miles. What apparently happens besides wear, is the hot fuel carbons up inside injectors, and nozzles and you get rougher running due to stiction, the little parts inside do not move freely. I never had any start or power problems. My rougher idle was a feel it in the seat experience and developed over a couple of weeks.

I have bought some Hot Shot Extreme and will put that in next at 8 oz per 20 gallons, supposed to use every 6 months with Hotshot EDT 1 oz per tank. Doing it increases the cetane rating and the burn is hotter and more complete. So at cold engine starting it lights off faster.

Before replacing injectors, run some cleaner in and see if it improves. Black smoke is either excess fuel and or poor fuel atomization due to clogged injector nozzle holes, poor combustion. Clean working injectors increase the MPG

That is interesting. I occasionally get a rough idle too. I have to do some diagnostic work and see how worn the CP3 pump and fuel injectors are by doing the leak-by tests.

I have been using a maintenance dose of fuel treatment made by Amalgamated Inc. https://www.amalgamatedinc.com/
for the entire time I have owned the truck. My goal was to avoid fuel system trouble as much as possible. I use their TDR-WDA product at a 1:300 ratio in winter and 1:400 during the summer. Fortunately, I only notice a light haze when I use full power.

People have tested Hot Shot and it actually works. I buy it at Amazon. You can have great filtration but it won't stop the fuel from causing injector deposits. You need to make certain the injectors are clean before doing the return flow test.

Garbage test...usually when I see stuff like this, I am suspect. They compared against the lowest technology Fleetguard filter...a cellulose filter. We have a NanoNet version of that same part that would smoke every one of these filters.

I recently tried using Hotshot Extreme and wow did it smooth out my Cummons diesel at idle, even more than HotShot EDT mixed with Seafoam.
Did it in a about 50 miles.

It also boosts cetane 6 or 7 points.

I had ignored cleaning injectors a while. I did use Extreme when I first got the truck 10,000 miles ago, but noticed no change, but the last 2 months, idle quality was poor. So was thinking injectors were sticky-dirty. I think what happens is hot engine head when it shuts down cooks the diesel in the injectors and it is like burning oil in a pan on the stove top. And overtime, the burned diesel fuel sticks to the inside of the passages.

I never considered heat soak. Interesting theory. The reason I chose Amalgamated, is because of the cleaning, lubricity, cetane and winter anti-wax properties. Every tank gets treated at the 300:1 ratio during winter. My injectors should be well prepared after 60k miles of steady use of clean treated fuel.
