The reason I changed is the final PSI gauge had dropped to 2.5psi

Opened up looks like typical diesel filter. It has hard plastic ends and core.
Inside the can was perfect clear diesel
Has no spring

I used my table saw grit blade to open it up

Nothing slimy or growing on it

Filter looks good. I always noticed a difference when I changed my fuel filter on my old 95 7.3 every 10k. It does make sense since diesel fuel filters seem to be high efficiency.

I replaced it with a CAT UHE (ultra) 416-1225 fuel filter.
It is 10.5 inches long, so it's bigger and supposedly better

The final PSI now reads 5, so the other was clogging up, which is good.

I have 3 filters, this, the OEM pf7977 and a wix 33118 primary 1-12 thread DD60 type filter on the frame rail

Hello, what year is your Ram pickup? I have a 2003 Ram. Cummins. My truck has the lift pump in the engine bay and would like to add a similar fuel filter after the lift pump. I have the factory 7 micron fuel filter immediately down stream from the lift pump. I would feel better filtering fuel through an additional 3 micron fuel filter before the high pressure fuel pump.

Such a filter can go anywhere you can fit one. A puller pump sucking from tank, well best filter is after the pump. But you can also move the pump to the frame rail. You can angle the can filter to fit on the rail, does not have to be straight up and down go for 45 degrees etc.

It will work at 90 degrees, but then any loose water in fuel may get by, but if you have the OEM filter, that does water in fuel

That seems to be a pretty popular filter.
according to the new standards, it is only a 5-10 micron filter, not 2.

Best you can do is 3. The way they test was changed as it was found inaccurate, and that is why CAT came out with the UHE filter line.

You want the best filtration for diesel, it is critical to help preserve high-pressure fuel parts.

FF63053NN, might use next but I read people get 30,000 miles out of these big CAT filter, and likely this other one too
Likely will go cheapest price between these two
Impressive list for NanoNet Cummins filtration
https://klmperformance.com/blogs/news/fleetguard-cummins-filtration-nanonet-filter-media

Cummins Filtration’s NanoNet nanotechnology-based fuel filtration media has been developed over several years of careful and extensive real-world field-testing to ensure an unrivaled degree of harmful particulate removal from fuel systems. What’s more, NanoNet fuel filtration products exhibit between 7 to 13 times greater retention of harmful particles within the fuel filtration media during engine vibration and fuel surge than its closest competitor.

Why do I need the Fleetguard® Filter with NanoNet Media?

  • Only a Nanonet Filter will protect your fuel injectors and Lube Oil throughout the filter's service interval.
  • The Nanonet media contains ten to thirteen times more containments than traditional filter media.
  • The filter is not affected by water in fuel like conventional cellulose filters.
  • Removes and contains the suspended fuel contaminants in real-world operating conditions.
  • The diesel fuel filter functions under all fuel flow levels to provide optimum filtration.
  • This filter can extend service intervals while maintaining high efficiency.
  • The NanoNet advanced filtration media provides the latest technology to ensure the absolute best diesel fuel filtration performance. The nanonet filter allows you to get your equipment to get the job every time.
  • Unlike traditional media, NanoNet media contains no cellulose fibers, so it is essentially a waterproof media.
  • The unique composition will not become waterlogged like conventional filters
  • Nanonet media provides the structural integrity needed for a high level of fuel filtration performance.
  • Only NanoNet media can provide three times more protection throughout the life of the filter than the next best competitive product.
  • Over time the containments contained within the fuel filters are affected by vibration, flow surge, and pressure fluctuations. These forces release captured particles from conventional filter media. These released particles can negatively affect fuel system performance and durability. The Fleetguard Nanonet media prevents this from happening.
  • This Fuel Filter's new NanoNet™ high-performance filtration media reduces the number of harmful particles reaching the engine's fuel injectors,
  • Only Nanonet filter media provides a reduction in equipment downtime and lower Total Cost of Ownership.
  • Nanonet Filter Media provides twice the contaminant holding capacity of conventional filters.
  • NanoNet™ Media – Consistent pore size throughout this unique media retains captured particles during engine vibration better than any competitive product. Fully Synthetic Media.
  • Fleetguard NanoNet filter media contains no glass and is not subject to water saturation.
  • Offer a dramatic reduction in hard particle penetration which fully protects the fuel injector against progressive damage,.
  • Exceeds conventional filter efficiency by 99.9% by trapping any contaminants larger than four microns.
  • Only the Nanonet Filter can maximize engine life with best-in-class fuel injector protection.
  • Only a Nanonet Filter Media can provide advanced performance throughout the life of the filter and performance doesn't decline with age.

The Fleetguard Cummins Filtration Warranty extends to there entire line of products, ensuring the same promise of performance and coverage beyond the competition. Fleetguard offers the best filtration warranty in the business!

NanoNet filtration is 10-13x more effective at removing 4-micron particulate
contaminants than the closest competitor, keeping injectors cleaner
and optimizing fuel atomization for more efficient combustion.

NanoNet filtration media is a patented product which features many distinct layers of protection to remove and retain particles as small as 4 microns. A Four Micron Particle is 12 times smaller than the smallest particle visible to the human eye. The Nanonet filtration media is a 100% continuous polymeric fiber composite media structure with bonded fibers for strength during vibration and flow surges. This structure means the captured particles are held in place during real-world operating conditions

A pleasant discovery!
The Cat 319-9844 UHE I bought cheap on Ebay few years ago will seal to my WIX head using the rubber seal from the 1R0750, it uses an edge seal. The other filter's seal is a perfect height and width. 7psi , its not a lot of pressure

The rubber ring will stick above the white plastic ring by at least 1/8"

the UHE 319-0844 is 1-14 thread and same length as 1R0750

CAT filters do not use steel on the filtered side as they do not want rust forming inside fuel filters, which corrosion could get into the injection system, as in they don't want their filters to possibly cause fuel system failures. Even though I have not seen any rust in any cut open diesel fuel filter, I suppose it's possible.
One way that might happen is during storage before it goes on the engine

CAT filters are made in the USA

editing as after I watched videos below, it has more to do with stamped steel parts and tiny micron sized bits of magnetized metals being created which stick to the metal and then flow out of the filter in use.

Very good points, I developed an adapter to put a cat filter on a Duramax, and Ford. After many conversations with a cat representative from the filter factory. The reason Cat started to make their own filters was that metal was being left in the filters after manufacture. When you stamp 1000’s of parts the tooling picks up a magnetic properties and transfers that to the parts, they in turn pick up metal fragments and are in the filters during the assembly process. So the filters we’re putting those particles into the engine. In addition to the spiral roving and the acrylic beads the filter is glued to the aluminum threaded insert and then the outer shell is rolled onto the aluminum threaded insert. So no hard metals could enter the oil system from the filter from stamping process. “Longer life through better filtration”.

Here is another guy who used a kit and the 416-1225 filter mounted under the air horn on the Cummins
Good pics and discussion

Good for the 2003!

Quote from the thread,

Glacier Diesel They are the Best and unmatched customer service. Richard likes Fleetguard and nothing wrong with them. The Cat Filters will save you money in the long run. The 416-1225 also will last 30 to 50 thousand miles you monitor when to change by your Fuel pressure gauge and a 1 to 2 or 3 psi drop before your CP3.
