While in Walmart I noticed that there are 3 different Castrol Synthetic 5w20s available...Magnatec, Edge Black and Edge Gold.

Can a Castrol fan explain the differences/capabilities etc...of each.

Magnatec seems to get more love on BITOG than the other two...

I tried to delete this thread after GOOGLING the topic and finding several BITOG threads....the BITOG 'Search' feature wasn't as fruitful. I was too late to delete the thread even though it was only a few minutes later. Sorry about that.

That's okay. The Magnatec is a full synthetic oil that many here have said makes for a quiet running engine. Any engine that runs quiet is a happy engine.

Their other oils are good as well.

What kind of car? What driving conditions? What kind of OCI do you plan on using?

I found out by chance, Edge-Gold 10-30 in a normal 7500 K miles run resulted in visible cleaning in the valve cover area where oil is added. No other oil I have used in this car over the last 251 K miles has done that

Run 5W/50 in all my cars year round! Live here in Western NC. No problems at all. Have done so for many years now!

I'm thinking of using Edge Gold in my Ford Focus because I want to extend my OCI due to the PITA belly pan which has 9 screws holding it in place. I'd like to do 10K (maybe even a little more) when I take it to Florida for a few months in the winter (condo rules and the belly pan make changing oil difficult). The 10K+ would be 80% highway driving.
I will use a high quality filter like a FU...

I'm sure some will say that Magnatec or Edge Black are capable of meeting my needs but I feel the Gold will give me the insurance in case I exceed 10K..

I'm not sure it's true but comments here at times refer to the Edge 0w-40 as a true synthetic oil, i.e. Grp 4, not grp 3 like some others. I'm using it in everything here and it's good. If it truly is a grp 4 syn oil, it's a bargain at Wally World.

I was combing the Castrol website tonight. Their website still shows only a limited number of Magnatec oils being full synthetic. I'd say it's a confusing time, as Amazon shows a picture of the 5w30 being "Full Synthetic. However, Castrol's website still suggests the various Magnatec weight are a mix of full and blends.

But even the blend has shown to be a great oil in today's engines...

BTW - I love your "Soviet State of WA" location comment...so true

Ford is being a bit cheap there. I know what you mean as I used to own a Mitsubishi Montero Sport that needed 2 skid plates to come off to access the drain plug and filter. A bit unwieldy. Many new cars with these plastic shields have access panels so the whole thing doesn't have to be removed.

Someone posted a pic of the full synthetic magnatec bottle 5w30 from wal mart shelf last week I think, but yes their website still doesn't have it listed

I don't use anything but castrol on any of my vehicles. I used to have an old jeep that I rode for 80000 miles using Castrol GTX and when I went to replace the valve cover gasket the valve train was as clean and new as it was the day the vehicle was built. I don't understand why anyone uses anything else. Especially that garbage Pennzoil.

And what evidence do you have to support that Pennzoil is garbage?

There are still a ton of rumors flying around from people my grandfather's age that are convinced Pennzoil and Quaker State put sludge in their engines. I have never used either so I don't have anything to base my opinion on. But I will say that Pennzoil doesn't help their cause with all the gunk in the bottom of Pennzoil Platinum jugs after you poor them out.

None, look back at some of his other posts and you will see a history of similarly uniformed posts.

Anyone that thinks that one major brand of motor oil over another is "garbage" or somehow detrimental to an engine is just not dealing in reality.
