Castrol TWS 10W60?

Was a relatively cold night last night. Dropped to almost freezing and the Motul 300v 20w/60 did not like the ambient temp. at all. Really thick stuff for winter cold starts.
Usually in summer the metal roofed garage gets up to 40 c or more so starting was smooth.

10w is going in after I have my lunch now.

the 20w/60 came out very thick and pretty dark. even after a 10/15 min warm up.

the 10w tws poured in nice and smooth - much thinner for winter.

Did consider them but the cost put me off. The 10w60 was shocking. (150 USD for the 5 litres)

Why would would it offer benefits over the Castrol or Motul?

Thanks

Hey bro, that price you quoted is for one case, which is 4 X 5 litres jugs. $150 for only one 5 litres jug is the most expensive motor oil I've ever heard of, and I think probably the most expensive motor oil ever sold. Liqui Moly is usually priced in the mid price/value ratio of the top end synthetic motor oils. They aren't the priciest, but they aren't least expensive either..usually they fall right in the middle of the price range of top end synthetics and the quality of most of their products is top notch. My personal opinion is that it's not as popular as some of the more common brands like castrol, royal purple, redline, etc... is because of it's scarce availability. If it was more available at more retail places (other than NAPA and some AA) it would be one of the more popular "boutique" synthetics in the foreign car PCMO category.

$150 for a case of 4 X 5litres jugs would price out to about $7.50 per litre or about $7 per quart, which is really not a bad price at all.

check out this link.. you'll see that their cases which are about $120 to $175 for their different oils, consists of (4) 5 litre jugs each:

Castrol and Motul are excellent choices also by the way. for Castrol I would only stick with the TWS 10W-60 (which is the only BMW, North American approved oil for the BMW M-engines). Most of the other Castrol Edge/Syntec varities other than their GC is pretty average group III/IV oils, with average to below average add packs.
Motul and Liqui Moly on the whole made better motor oils, with more stout add packs than most Catrol products.
If you want extra protection for your recently rebuilt engine you can't go wrong with this oil from LM. It has extra moly in the add pack which will protect your newly rebuilt engine better than almost anything you can find in the same price/quality category:

Yep 150 USD for just 5 litres!!
Uruguay is one of the most expensive countries in the whole of the americas! Just a loaf of bread costs us almost 4 USD!
And our salaries are third world!! So a huge portion just pays for food (and car oil etc). One car is a luxury here.

When I built it I did add plenty of moly paste to the cam lobes, tappets etc so they got a good coating.

You can also buy Lqui Moly additive here but I think the Castrol TWS should be just fine. (100USD for 5 litres) still not cheap but it should be ok for 5-7K kms.

I was a bit cautious about the LM as they do state just for racing whereas the Castrol seems to be a mix for street and racing. I don't know!

Well the TWS is in now and we'll see.

Regards

Chris

have you tried ordering from one of the site here, and having it delivered to uruguay. you could probably save a lot of money even when you take into account the international shipping rates, and any customs fees etc.... 100, or 150 for 5L jugg sounds absolutely ridicoulous. I've never heard of motor oil being so expensive.
what is the cheapest motor oil you guys can buy over there btw? are their any local/domestic brands that are reasonable values?

And here we are thinking that we are getting screwed when we pay more than $7 or $8 per quart for high end synthetics in the states. I usually don't buy oil until there's oil change specials and I can pick up full synthetics for less than $6 per quart. Or if I'm paying regular retail price, it's either walmart, or costco (usually with rebate).

what about HDEO's are they any cheaper over the "regular" synthetics in uruguay, as they usually are here in the states? not sure if Rotella or Delo synthetic have heavier weight oils that will fit your application. Delvac-1 probably has something in that viscosity grade, I think there are like at least 8 or 10 different grades it comes in.

It all depends on where you are. I've seen 1 liter bottles of Castrol oil on store shelves in Germany for 23 Eur which is about $30.

Hessam,

Welcome to Uruguay! Lol

You should see the prices of used cars. A 10 year old chevy corsa will set you back about 10K at least.

Cheapest mineral oil will be about 35 usd for 4 litres. Suitable for lawnmowers IMHO but they put it in everything as very few people worry about what they put in their engines here.

New cars come along with synthetic and then they change it with mineral!

Ah shippping oil to Uruguay? We can forget that.
60% tax (on the shippping costs also), then admin fees of about 100 bucks just to relea
se it!.

So what we have it what we need to fork out for.

start digging hole in the ground in your back yard bro!!! there's supposedly a lot of oil discoveries recently in that part of the world (i.e Brazil, uruguay, chile, etc...)...

if you hit black gold, you can perhaps get some help (maybe even from the BITOG board) putting together your own stout add pack, and make a killing selling your own Motor Oil!!!!!

That's something I always wondered, how hard it would be to source and produce your own motor oil, with the base oils and add packs of your own chosing!!!! you can put it in a really cool bottle, give it a cool name, make a killing, and have the peace of mind of knowing exactly what's in your OWN OIL!!!!

By the time you get everything up and running, Hessam, you'd probably be able to get the same end product at a far lower cost by contracting out to RLI or Ashland or some other company that's been in the business for a while. Either way you go broke unless you offer a full line and have a good marketing plan and funds to cover ten years worth of operating expenses.

There was a time when the desire to make some good stuff was enough to get you going. The existence of the Amsoil and Castrol brands is evidence enough of that. That time has passed.

Well after some testing with Castrol TWS 10w/60:

Starts nicely in cold weather.
Quiet.

BUT hot idle pressure had dropped a 3/4 psi compared with the Motul 20w/60.
I imagine this is to do with the HTHS index.

Motul : 7.3
Castrol: 5.3

Well I've decided to try some ZDDP MAXX as I know the TWS only has 900/1000 ppm ph/zinc.

Also was informed that 20W50 was the old spec even Castrol even listed RS 10W60 in their Classic section as a modern alternative to their older spec "XL 20W50".
