Do you know the zinc levels of the TWS? As I have flat tappets (INA).

Had to change all my tappets(lifters) and cams last year due to wear.

Not sure if this level of ZDDP is correct tws 10w60: 1294
Motul 15w/50: 1130

That's a good question and IIRC the ZDDP level of TWS is quite low, in the 700 ppm range.
There are a couple of TWS 10W-60 used oil analysis of a few years ago if you want to scroll back to see if you can find them.
I still wouldn't be concerned about using the TWS as this ester based oil likely has other AW elements that may substitute for ZDDP. ZDDP is not the only boundary lubricant used just the cheapest and expensive oils do use other proprietary AW additives.
For example the FUCHS Titan GT-1 0W-20 race oil I'm using in one of my cars contains no ZDDP at all!

yikes! The flat lifters depend on a good zddp level I understand.
But strange thing is don't some of the M series BMW have flat tappets?

Still concerned now about making this oil change this weekend.
Spent 100 USD on 5 litres. I thought it had about 1250 in it.
Did you get this info from Castrol themselves?

Regards

They have Castrol syntec 5w/40 here.
This has a high zddp level no?

Could the 2 oils be mixed to raise the zddp level? 10w60 with the 5w40?

Is the syntec esther based?

TWS (also sold as Castrol EDGE 10w-60) is a blend of PAO and ester bases. The rest of the Castrol product line, including their other 10w-60s', are more conventional blends with lower film strength. TWS is a unique product based on the old formulation of Formula RS Racing Syntec from the mid-1990's. It's a racing oil that works for other applications that BMW basically paid Castrol to continue to produce under a new name when Castrol reformulated the Castrol RS product line in the year 2000.

Thanks very much guys.
1040ppm should be ok then for flat lifters. 1000 is the min I believe for conventional oils.

So PAO and esther based. Interesting oil.

BMW service departments or online. Not sure how much BMW charges, but it goes for about $13-$15/liter online.

Not sure about USA but here down south BMW service departments sell it at a much higher price than the local sellers.
Even Castrol directly sell it here cheaper than BMW!

I paid about 22 bucks a litre here. But this is Uruguay and everything is more expensive.

Would prefer to put Liqui Moly in but at 150 USD for 5 litres no thanks.

Can anyone tell me if the M or Z series BMW's have flat lifters like my alfa?

Just got a mail from Castrol:

"The formulation used for TWS 10W-60 has recently changed, the previous formulation had typical Zinc and Phosphorus levels of 0.107 and 0.100 respectively. The new formulation has typical values of 0.100 and 0.094. Please note that, due to production variations, it is quite possible that a sample of the new product would give similar figures to the old formulation and vice versa. We would expect these levels of ZDDP to be suitable for older technology engines such as flat tappet designs.

I hope this answers your question. Please contact us again if you require further information.

A common problem on the I4 engines and low idle oil pressure was loosing the aluminum plugs in the crank. Is that an issue with the Alfa Sud engines also?

Never heard of that before Ed and I'm a daily user of my alfa forum dedicated to suds and 33's.
You mean the oil channel plugs? These were only on a few models of cranks. Most later models didn't have the cross drilled cranks.

Yes, the plugs on the cross drilling. It was an issue up through the 2L I4. When I rebuilt my 1300 Giulietta, I tapped the holes and fitted threaded plugs. Fixed that problem for good.

We didn't get the Alfa Suds here in North America. We haven't seen a new Alfa since the early '90s Spider. I'm eagerly awaiting the return of Alfa next year.

ah yes it's normally a good idea when cleaning the crank to drill out the plugs and thread them.

My fav sud is the 1.5 ti 82/83 model. Lovely fun car.
