My son just bought a 2016 Elantra and the seller offers a lifetime engine warranty if you change oil every 4000 miles with a Castrol brand oil. It will be driven mostly for 10 mile commutes to work. Any suggestions for a Castrol oil to use and why? 5W-20 is suggested by Hyundai, don't know if that is required by CarSense the seller.

The only requirement seems to be Castrol every 4k, filter changes/emissions maint. as laid out in the owners manual, and a yearly stop at the dealership if they aren't doing the maintenance at their shop.
Not a half bad deal for a lifetime coverage of lubricated parts!

Castrol, Shell, and others offer warranties on your engine if you use their oil exclusively. So the dealer isn't really doing anything exceptional.

I think carsense may simply be relying Castrol for the warranty claims. Say using a google search that a carssnse customer actually received emails from Castrol.

This is a pre-owned Elantra so the factory powertrain warranty drops down to 60K, I believe. So how much will Carsense charge for the oil change? If it's under $35 out the door, that's a good deal so long as they don't try the irritating upsell on every visit.

Not necessary to use them, just need receipts showing that it was done. It will be up to my son to deal or not with this. At 4K mile intervals for short run driving, does it make sense to use full synthetic? I probably would.

Warranty against what..... damage from improper oil?
First, what does the warranty cover? Second, usually these types of warranties don't cover much and require a lot of hoops to be jumped though and will deny at any chance. Personally I wouldn't bother. Yamaha had the same thing if you changed with their lube and documented it, extended the warranty to 100k on their motorcycles IIRC. If more hassle than its worth. Never seen a single documented case of oil damaging an engine. Not servicing it or running low/dry... sure.
