Just came from Walmart and the GTX was $16.47 sitting right next to the MS5K for $12.97. GTX on the shelf was full while the MS5K had maybe 2 or 3 jugs left. Makes sense equal or better oil cheaper price so why not.

Hi Garak you got that right.Partsourse gave me a price match for Castrol GTX because Walmart ran out of my Quaker State grrrr again but in the end i have saved 22 bucks with two 4.4 jugs plus two oil filters (orange can)..but i got the Quaker State 5w30 dino at walmart on sale for 12 bucks but they ran out of 5w20 then off i go to partsourse to buy the GTX..so today im doing two of my cars and done with till next time..the Castrol will be in the Fusion that takes 6 litres thats why i got both 4.4 jugs
Guess I should be living in canada, as I cant justify it down here at $16 at wally. Glad I got my QSGB for $12.99 at K Mart. I havent used GTX in over 4 yrs honestly, never thought it was bad oil either.
Yep, paying $16 or over in Canada for GTX is a sucker price, at least if you're anywhere near one of the three major retailers of oil. Like I said, it's always on special someplace. Other brands are hit and miss for rollbacks; that's why I stocked up on PYB. GTX is easy to find cheap up here.
When things are at regular price, they're pretty much all the same, be it GTX, PYB, QSGB, or Valvoline at Walmart - in other words, too high.

Funny how things change. When I was a kid driving my first car around in the 70's, Castrol GTX was reputed to be the very best oil available. All the motorheads, engine builders, and general car enthusiasts that I knew used it. Everybody with a Holly double pumper or an Edelbrock high rise or a set of custom fit Accel wires and coil had GTX in the crankcase... What happened?
I would use GTX if it was a lower price in my location. I've seen a few sport bike racers who use GTX 5W-30 in their sport bikes for races. And they all say no clutch slippage.

Like you, I have a long memory and am still a little PO'd at Castrol, but I'm slowly learning to let go of things like that. Same with Mobil changing M1 from all PAO to Gp. III and hiding it. I still cringe when I have to buy their petrol and I won't use M1 anymore, even though it's an excellent oil, but I have used MS5K in my sister's RAV.

I blame Castrol for what M1 did. After all, they started it.
My soreness about what Castrol did extends to the point that I won't use Syntec unless it's a specific offering I want but can't find elsewhere, such as GC or the 5w-50 (yes, I know there's M1 0w-40, and some 5w-50s that one can never find in Canada). I'll buy GTX no problem, but if I want a synthetic, I'll go with just about anything else.
The fact that Syntec has historically been overpriced here (which is beginning to change) while GTX has historically been the cheapest name brand conventional has a lot to do with it, too. Another thing that's odd about Castrol is they have an absolute boatload of different HDEO offerings in our Walmarts. You want a wide selection of Rotella, you go to Canadian Tire or Partsource. You want a wide selection of Castrol HDEOs, Walmart is the place to be.

I have used Castrol GTX 10w 30 for approx 20 years,i have 2 cadillac sts,s with 32 valve 300 hp engines in them.The one cadillac has over 250,000 miles on it with no engine troubles,the other cadillac has over 170,000 miles on it with no engine troubles either.I also have a silverado Z71 with 180,000 miles on it no engine trouble at all.I do the maintenace on them myself,and i feed them a steady diet of Castrol GTX 10w 30 and a supertech oil filter #3675.Hope this helps. Have not used Castrol GTX for many years. There are so many superior oils out there for a few dollars more (Mobil 1 and PP my current favorites). However, I think you will be fine using it for 5,000 miles/6 month OCI.
