Castrol GTx good for engine requiring API SG?

I have a 92 honda accord which according to the owners manual requires an oil meeting API SG standards, but when I went to look on the bottle of my Castrol GTX it has every thing but SG? can I still use it in my car?

SG was replaces by SH in about 1996. The newer spec Castrol is just fine in your Honda. Just make sure you use a red funnel to get the molecules to line up correctly (lol). Do a google search on things like "API SG" or "API SH" and there should be plenty of info. To read instructions and ask questions and search for answers is a good policy. Don't forget the red funnel.

The newer specification oils go in order from your SG all the way to SM. The second letter increases through the alphabet for newer specs. The SM is probably what GTX is spec'ed at right now. SM supercedes SG an will perform fine.

If you find SG oil I wouldnt touch it, its like 15 years old lol. Every few years a new spec comes out, and they're always backward-compatible. I'm using SL right now in my 1995 that calls for SH.

Thanks for the question Mr. Accord. I have a 93 F-150 that also calls for SG. I have been using Havoline 10w40 which was SL. I was in Walmart a couple of weeks ago and they had Castrol GTX in the 5 quart container for $9.97-also SM. I decided to go with this. The new Havoline was I believe $11.88 for 5 quarts. Only the 10w40 was this price,the 10w30 was also eleven something.10w40 is what I use. No problems in 175,000 miles. Now I will change brands with confidence.
