Castrol GTX and Havoline

I have posted here many times in the past (the all forebidden question of which oil is better?)

Lately, I have pretty much bounced back and forth between using Havoline and Castrol GTX which seem to be the two "more favored" conventional oils here in this forum based on used oil analysis and VOA's.

My question is this, with cost not being a factor, and considering Havoline seems to have a lot more moly in it compared to Castrol GTX, and also the fact that I change my oil every 3mo/3k... Would I benefit more from using Havoline due to the larger dosage of molybdenum vs Castrol which has very little?

I say try both of them and go with whatever one you engine likes better(quieter or whatever). And dont look back I dont think that in a million mi there would be any real difference. I will say that castrol products (which I have always liked) seem to be getting more attention on here than what I remember. Except GC which always got alot of attention.

1)Havoline/Chevron
2)Motorcraft (dino retail pricing)
3)Castrol GTX

All three are very good. Let your engine decide which it likes best. The best way to tell is by running two OCIs of each.

I thought you had a Havoline run going after
long GTX use - so any difference ?

I'd use whichever is cheaper at the time you are buying oil, or stock up during a good sale. Taking care of your cooling system and other basic maintenence is much more important than choosing between good oils when it comes to engine life.

I'd use Pennzoil Conventional.

I really doubt that either is significantly better than the other. The key is regular oil changes. Use either one, and I bet you'll never see any oil-related problems for the life of your car.

I Agree with mikemc. Todays oils are great and if you stick to factory recomended intervals and classes you can spend your time and money being meticulous about brakes steering, tires, coolant, batterys, belts keeping the interior from getting ratty and suspension.

Oil is a hobby or obsession for most of us because it is so interesting but it has been shown that the selection of brand is not important to long life. I was even considering getting a bunch of castrol GTX so I could use the white bottles for Jug lines !

I notice absolutely no difference in performance.
In fact, I've used many different brands over the past few years, and many people will make comments about how their engine runs more noisy on one vs. another. I've never experienced that.

I'll throw you another (hopeless never being able to make of your mind decision) ---->Motorcraft Blend, it's suppose to be extremely yummy.

I would not make your decision on Moly alone, as it is not the end-all to engine protection.

BP owns Castrol, Chevron-Texaco owns Havoline, for what that's worth.

At least in my part of the world, Castrol is available in many more places, with many more choices of quart, 5quart jugs, and various mixes of dino, semi-synthetic, etc... That does not make it better, but it does make Castrol an "easier" choice.

Castrol smells better (to me). Then again, very few people put their oils through the smell test

I've used both and found them both to be very decent oils. Either way, with 3000 mile OCI's, i bet your engine will outlast the rest of the car. Now your filter choice may make more of a difference. I use Wix oil and air filters and have not found a better one yet...

grbr95: If you're doing the 3mo/3k thing, (which everyone should do) then you have no worries when it comes to your motor.

I agree with Cutehumor. 3mo/3k is like taking a shower avery time you go to the bathroom.

Awsome!! Becauese I shower twice a day. So the 3 mo/3k OCI is perfect for me.
Wake-up shower in the AM.. PM shower after I work out.

I believe bryan meant if you take a shower everytime you use the bathroom (6-8 times a day)

If you're taking a shower 6-8 times a day, you may need to get your eyes checked, cause your aim may be off..
