Castrol Edge VW qualifications

Also keep in mind, it's the European Castrol EDGE 5w30 that's on the VW list, but not the US Castrol EDGE 5w30. Despite having the same name in both markets, they're not the same oil.
 
VW 500.00 oil

Oils listed in this section meet the VW 500.00 specification. This is an “old” oil specification and is applicable to engines built before model year 2000 (up to August 1999). Oils with an approval made post March 1997 will have been given an alternative, later VW specification.

This oil can be used in older petrol and some diesel engines, except from those referred to under other specifications. Not suitable for vehicles using extended service intervals.

VW 501.01 oil

Oils listed in this section meet the VW 501.01 specification. This is an “old” oil specification and is applicable to engines built before model year 2000 (up to August 1999). Oils with an approval made post March 1997 will have been given an alternative, later VW specification.

VW 501.01 is very similar to the VW 500.00 specification, and can be used for the same applications in older petrol and some diesel engines, except those referred to under other specifications.


VW 502.00 oil

Oils listed in this section meet the VW 502.00 specification.
Oils meeting this specification should only be used in petrol engines. Recommended for those which are subject to arduous conditions. It must not be used for any engines with variable service intervals or any which are referred to under other specifications.

VW 503.00 oil

Oils listed in this section meet the VW 503.00 specification. This specification is for petrol engines with extended service intervals (up to 30,000km or 24 months).

It includes the AUDI S4, but not the RS4, the TT, S3 or A8 6.0 V12 with outputs of more than 180bhp, which should use oils meeting the VW 503.01 or VW 504.00 spec. VW 503 00 is now superceded by the VW 504.00 specification.

VW 503.01 oil

Oils listed in this section meet the VW 503.01 specification. This specification is specifically for Audi RS4, Audi TT, S3 and Audi A8 6.0 V12 models with outputs of more than 180bhp, running with variable service intervals (30,000km or 2 years). Now superceded by the VW 504.00 specification.

VW 504.00 oil

Oils listed in this section meet the new VW 504.00 specification. These oils are suitable for all petrol engines with extended service intervals (30,000km or 2 years).

The VW 504 00 specification supercedes the VW 503 00 and VW 503.01 specifications. VW 504 00 oils are suitable for engines meeting the demands of Euro IV emissions standards.

VW 505.00 oil

The oils in this section meet the the VW 505.00 specification; the oldest VW specification for diesel cars. Now only really relevant only to pre 2000 diesel cars (with or without turbocharger). For diesels from 2000 onwards, the VW 505.00 specification has largely been superceded by the 505.01, 506.00, 506.01 and 507.00 specifications.

VW 505.01 oil

The oils in this section meet the VW 505.01 specification. These oils are especially for "Pumpe-Düse" (unit injector or "PD" engines) running on fixed service intervals (15,000km / 12 months).

It is vitally important to use an oil meeting either this, the VW 506.01 specification or the VW 507.00 specification to avoid damaging the diesel pump in PD engines.

For PD engined cars with a DPF, use only an oil meeting the VW 507.00 specification.

VW 506.00 oil

Oils in this section meet the VW 506.00 specification. These oils are suitable for diesel engines with extended service intervals of up to 50,000km / 2 years. Not for use on engines with a single injector pump. Oil change is indicated by the electronic service indicator.

VW 506.01 oil

The oils in this section meet the VW 506.01 specification. These oils are especially for "Pumpe-Düse" (unit injector or "PD" engines) running on extended service intervals (30,000 - 50,000km / 24 months). Oil change is indicated by the electronic service indicator.

It is vitally important to use an oil meeting either this, the VW 505.01 specification or the VW 507.00 specification to avoid damaging the diesel pump in PD engines.

For PD engined cars with a (DPF), use only an oil meeting the VW 507.00...

VW 507.00 oil

The oils in this section meet the VW 507.00 specification. These oils are suitable for almost all VAG diesel engines from 2000 onwards with extended service intervals, unitary injector pumps and also Pumpe-Düse ("PD") engines.

Excludes V10, R5 engines and VW Commercial vehicles without fitted DPF (diesel particulate filters) – these must use a 506 01 specification oil.
 
I thought 504.00 is a tougher specification than 502.00. Also why is there no mention of it on the Castrol site? Hmmm. [/quote]

The 504 is the new spec for gas engines and covers all previous gas engine oil req. and the 507 covers all previous diesel engine oil requirements. Only iffy thing i think is if u have one that requires the 506.01 0w30 on the V10 TDI idk bout that

And that irks me to no end. Different products in different markets, but with exactly the same name. Then how do you know which one the documentation refers to? Grrr...

The list in my second post comes straight off the US VW site. The still list the Castrol EDGE 5w30 as 504.00

Someone needs to tell VoA that this Castrol EDGE is not the same Castrol EDGE as the one sold in the US.




I sent an email. If it will do any good, we'll have to wait and see.
 
Just like SynPower 5w30. On AoA list because it's transcribed from the Euro list, but its' a different oil for N/A. It's not a bad thing if you are not overheating the oil, Euro cars run fine on the thinner A5 / 10cSt / NA oils here.

However, if you need a heavy oil, get the A3 / 12-14cSt / 5w-40 / 5w30 Euro (SynPower) or a comparable Castrol Product, like 5w-40 Syntec or GC 0w-30.
 
Another reason there is no mfg specs on NA Edge...

I'm switching my Jetta to Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30 for the winter. It's an A5 bordering on A3 (HTHS of 3.4)
 
The 504/507 oil in the States is the Castrol Professional Long Life III that you can get at a VW/Audi dealer. The SLX Professional OE is just a 502 oil that is used in place of Syntec 5w-40.
