Castrol Edge High Mileage 10w40 is ACEA A3/B3 and A3/B4 approved. Even though it's not spec'd as VW 502.00 would it be fine for a high mileage 03 Audi Allroad 2.7t (twin turbo) that calls for that VW spec? 130k miles on vehicle. Thanks!

(I posted a similar question in the passenger car section yesterday, I hadn't realized that there was an European section until now. First time dealing with European specs)

Quattro Pete uses it in his '02 BMW 530i maybe he can provide some insight about this.

A3/B4 and VW502.00 both require a spec of HTHS of 3.5+, give it a try.

Why not use Castrol 0W-40? It is designed for engines like your 2.7t. Castrol 0w30 and 0W-40 are their only PAO (high quality base stock) oils, which have very good cold flow and very high shear resistance. Plus it has the specs you need.

Is there a specific problem you are trying to fix?

Also consider Mobil 1 high mileage 10w30 or 10w40, or the various 5w40 HDEOs.

Why not use Castrol 0w-40 which is less expensive and actually meets the VW spec?

The only reason to run High Mileage oil would be to try to curtail oil consumption or slight oil seepage.

Is there a problem with you engine?
If not, stick to Castrol 0W40 or Mobil 1 0W40.

Mobil 1 10W30 won't do good in that engine.

It's A3/B3. If you can use a ACEA/VAG 0w30 or 5w30, a modern A3/B3 10w30 can't be worse.

Sorry, had no clue it is A3/B3.
But if there is an issue with consumption, I think 10W40, or Rotella T6 or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck etc. would be better solution.
If consumption is not an issue, 0W40 hands down.

No worries. This only applies to M1 high mileage 10w30, not the run-of-the-mill API 10w30.

Yeah I know what you mean.

10w40 HM too IIRC.

Both of which are some of my favorites from XOM.

Sadly, they are no longer SL though.

*On a side note, I do wish the Edge HM 10w40 was a bit easier and cheaper to find.

Do you have AAP near you? Edge HM 10w-40 is currently $5.50/qt, which isn't that much more expensive than 5qt jugs of Edge at Walmart.

Unfortunately all we have around here are CARQUESTs and none of them have it in stock. And AAP online won't ship it.

You still haven't answered why you want to run it as opposed to say Castrol 0w-40?

Heck, even I'm questioning why I'm running it in mine. My hopes were that it would reduce oil seepage from rear main seal and reduce oil consumption. So far, the seepage appears to be unchanged. And as far as oil consumption, it may have reduced just very slightly, or it may just be my imagination.

I was thinking that if it met the specs then why not try to reap the benefits of a high mileage oil, to get that warm and fuzzy feeling. Especially in a high mileage engine with unknown service history. (I know, not logical thinking) I just imagined that lube shops would have filled with whatever bulk they had on hand. But then you guys explained why the GC 0w40 was a better oil and with the price and availability at WalMart compared to the price and non-availability of the HM 10w40 that pretty much made my choice for me.

Side note:

Bought my Castrol EDGE 10w40 HM. They didn't have a Boss for her car, so they gave me a Mann for $2.

Pays to play dumb folks. Plays to pay dump.
