Castrol EDGE too thin for Subaru?

I have a NA 06 Subaru Legacy 2.5i. I keep hearing they like thicker oils. I ran dealer bulk until 45k. Now running QS UD 5w30. Also have Valvoline Synpower 5w30. Both have a 100C cSt of ~10.5. Castrol EDGE is 9.8.

Any Subaru owners run EDGE in a NA engine?

Just wanted some opinions.

I have a 2009 Impreza 2.5i and just changed my oil yesterday to Eneos 5w40. I took a trip after the change which totaled a little over 100 miles both ways. The gas mileage stayed the same as the 5w30 Pennzoil Ultra. I also took another trip today and burned very little gas. I'm very impressed so far with the Eneos. It was also reasonable on Amazon.com with no tax and free sh/h. It's also an oil catered to Japanese makes. I'll report back in seveal 1k miles with a used oil analysis. I'm at peace of mind that this is a good oil. I ran Rotella 5w40 and that really sucked gas mileage wise. I figure maybe because it's not a 100% true Synthetics and because it's a Heavy Duty Engine Oil "HDEO"

And also... Not to stir any drama, but I've run into far too many threads on here and on other forums that state that EDGE isn't really able handle 15k intervals without bad wear numbers. I honestly would run Pennzoil Ultra before EDGE, but that's just me. I have more confidence in Pennzoil because it's proven to be a good oil in the platinum form, so I would assume that Ultra would be good if not better. All of the Sopus "Shell" oils get a lot of good reviews on here. Rotella for instance gets consistently good UOA, it sucks that it wasn't for my application. It's better for the Turbo guys.

I know I said all this stuff about Eneos being a good oil after only having it in my engine for 2 days. It has to be good. The advertisement is really crazy. I would think that if it turned out to be a bad oil it wouldn't be here for much longer.

The Japanese are also very competitive in regard to technology. I don't think that would settle for an inferior product. It seems that the Japanese always perfect upon other technologies from other countries. Ex Honda's Variable Cylinder Management formally introduced by GM.

Depends on your application. Under normal conditions even a 20 weight would most likely do fine.

I personally like a 40 weight in the boxer, and when I run a 5w30 it's PP (because of stash) or on sale conventional.

IMHO, Castrol EDGE 5w30 is pretty thin for a Subie.
I have some Castrol EDGE from last year's MIR promotion, and it won't be going in the Subaru.
Subaru recommends a starburst 5w30 for all uses.
Subaru then goes on to recommend a wide range of grades based upon ambient temperature range and intended use.
The Subaru faithful in general prefer a forty weight, so mine is now on GC, a virtual forty.
OTOH, you could probably use Castrol EDGE and run it out to Subaru's recommended normal service OCI of 7.5K miles or months, and the engine would still likely outlive the rest of the car.

N/A Subaru's usually do very well on any oil. I have two n/a's and they both get High Mileage oil (usually Max Life and recently M1). I also prefer more robust oils than Energy Conserving.

The only Edge uoa in a Subaru I can recall is this one on a WRX. , although there is some GTX in it. Maybe you can find another one with a search.

There are probably a lot of turbo and n/a Subaru's driving around oil 30 grades that sheared to a 20 grade.

Yep, Toyo Roki and Tokyo Roki are two separate filter companies. I used to think it was a typo too until I researched it.

By the way, to the OP, even though Castrol Edge (and Havoline DS) are thin for their grade, they still control wear very well. It's not a Subaru, but I ran Castrol Edge for 5k miles in my Integra throughout the winter, and I also subjected it to very aggressive driving and it held up fine. Wear came back very low.

I have been running 5w20 in my EJ22 and no plans to switch. Getting close to 25K since I made the switch. Car has 147K on the ticker. The Subi seeps to run better than when I bought (not that that says anything).

I owned a CRV before and got thrown for a loop myself when I first came across the tokyo roki's.

I just love these filters and wish they were still in production. If anyone knows of an exact clone with a different name on it let me know.

No it's not too thin for your Subaru. As has been said Subarus seem to prefer thicker oils, but Edge is not thin to the point that it will cause any harm. Though if your towing or beating on the engine then maybe a 5w-40 might be a better route to go

We have two Subies. Since we live in sunny silly-con valley where it never gets too cold, I run 10-30 oil in both. The wife's Forester has about 107k on the clock so it's been getting Maxlife Synthetic. My Outback has about 65k, so I'm running Synpower.

I'm sorry, my error. There is Tokyo Roki oil filters and then there is Toyo Roki oil filters. My S2000 uses PCX-004 oil filter made by Toyo Roki.
