Castrol Edge 5W30

If its not leaking or burning to much should be fine.

I like Castrols High Mileage oil as well as Valvoline's Maxlife. Both are a semi-syn and have worked great in a lot of different cars I have used them in.

I may have a slight real main seal leak. When I park on uneven surfaces I get a minor leak, not sure if a High Mileage oil would help but I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try.

I've been trying to figure out which synthetic is really better for years. No clear winners. All the big name brands do well, Valvoline, Amsoil, Mobil 1, Castrol, QuakerS, Pennz, Kendall, all good.

In a vehicle like that, use the Castrol Edge Extended Perf 5w30 and go 1-year, 15,000 miles, but if its severe service, cut it short to around 8 months maximum.

Thats the old Cologne Germany V6, very tough, can take about any oil for any amount of time really. Mobil 1 Extended Perf a good choice too, like the Castrol version, tested like crazy to go a little longer.

Thanks I didn't think those engines were very tough since they do have timing chain/tensioner issues, but I did notice that they run well on a variety oil oils.

If you got a leak but want to go full synthetic, check out Full Synthetic High Mileage with Maxlife.

I've used the standard synthetic blend Maxlife in the past and it works great. A very highly regarded oil.

It seems like most oils discussed here have so sort of niche. For example pennzoil in known for its cleaning. What is castrol edge's strength?

If you've already got a leak, stick with MaxLife red bottle (blend). Any full synthetic will make matters worse and require some very expensive top offs.

It is more that Pennzoil is advertised recently for its cleaning.

According to its latest marketing materials, Edge delivers "Strength for Maximum Performance." They go on to say that "Castrol EDGE is three times stronger against viscosity breakdown than the leading synthetic and leading conventional oils."

Don't ask me. I'm just quoting their literature.

Products like engine oil are hard to differentiate because the customer is not able to visibly see what the oil does inside his engine, or not able to see any differences in results between various oils with his naked eye. So the marketing teams have to get very creative and boast about some aspect that will make them stand out from competition. So, Edge focuses on strength. Pennzoil Ultra focuses on cleanliness. M1 focuses on "keeping your engine running like new." And so on...

I don't think Edge has a "niche", and it tends to be expensive for a Group III oil (although Walmart reduced the price down to under $22 for a 5qt jug recently...but I don't shop at Walmart). That said if you find it on sale it's a solid choice. I'm using it for the first time ever (I've never ran Castrol anything in the past) and it seems to be doing just fine in my Eco-Boost. I got several jugs of the Edge EP on sale and intend to use it with 10k OCI's on my next couple oil changes in my Scion xD.

In my experience and from reading the posts/used oil analysis here,Edge's niche imo would be some of the lowest wear metals and smoothest/quietest engines. It's the same price as all the other over the counter synths which are all grp III oils,so it's mostly down to brand preference I'm sure.
