Good morning everyone, I have been viewing BITOG for quite some time and I would like to see what you have to say for a question I have. My current vehicle is a Pontiac G6 with a 3.5L 3600 series V6, I bought the car used with 22k, I have been running Royal Purple 5w30 + 1 can LubroMoly MoS2 w/ Mobil 1 filter for the past 2 yrs, changing it every 3k. This last oil change I switch to Castrol Edge and added 2 cans of Lubro Moly MoS2 + K&N filter. The engine has never felt better with this past oil change, dare I say better than when I first got the car at 22k... My question is what is do you think of this set up? I like the fact that the castrol is approved for extended drains/ wont harm my cats... without compromising wear protection. I am very happy with the performance but would like feed back to make sure I am not over doing it with too much moly (will too much moly cause increased wear?). I drive the car relatively lightly but would like to keep it running in top shape.... Indefinitely :).

do you really need 2 cans of additive mixed with a good engine oil?

im sure just the RP or edge alone is perfectly fine especially if you are only changing it out every 3k.

100 miles a day is not an issue to any good oil. especially if you are doing allot of highway miles. it's pretty easy on oil..

A fellow Long Islander! Welcome to Bitog. I'm running Castrol EDGE 5W30 in my E-150 van with 1 bottle of LM, I like the combo. I'd watch the 2 bottles of LM it might be too much, excessive amounts of moly could be harmful. Sometimes a little is good, a lot can be a problem.

What kind of service does the car see? Oh wait you're on Long Island so that would be severe for probably 95% of us.

You could do a used oil analysis at 7500 miles and see how the oil is doing. It is possible that you can change the oil twice a year, worst case every 4 months depending on how the used oil analysis report is. 100 miles a day certainly would get the oil up to temp, but the L.I. traffic is tough, unless you're one of the lucky commuters who travels off peak.

If you leave it in there, I would not add any more at the next oil change as there will be plenty of residual moly floating around in there. Next time you use the product, just use one can.

One can is more than enough. And why in the world are you running RP, or Edge and changing at 3k? Either of those oils will do the job admirably for 2x or 3x that easily. Save the expense of the second can of moly, and get some analysis done so you are managing by fact.

Edge I've noticed is an amazing smooth running oil. My wife's SUV never ran smoother while running it. So smooth in fact, even she noticed and said something, and noticed when I took it out just recently. I plan on going back to it in her truck and sticking with it. I'm also extremely tempted to try it in my car... but I doubt anything could make my car run smoother than it is now. But I think the improvement you have has more to do with the switch to it than the extra Moly.

On the Moly thing, if it was me I would shoot for 200 to 250 ppm Moly overall. I've read an heard where that's like the magic spot for it and when you start going way over that, it can actually cause wear. This is not a fact, just speculated by some. But they were pretty smart people.

Like they said, two cans of Lubro Moly in your size crankcase is too much.
Especially after the initial treatment, which plates the metals .

I like the results of Lubro Moly, for sure. Yes, we all know the engine will run fine without it. I just want better, and it is.

ive been adding mos2 to all my cars for the past few OCI's. I can tell you the oil has been getting darker excessivly fast, and its not black, its almost like rust when it drains (dark redish orange tint)

Amen! Thats what the oil was like after we drained it out of my car! The Oil color was so strange we thought the engine had a mechanical problem.

The engine also ran smoother than it ever has with the can in it. I thought one can was too much.

So, what is it doing in there, that makes it run well? And why is it "Insoluble?"

I have found it helps the engine. it also makes the Oil color look like something is wrong with the engine. Adding half a can is all i seemed to have needed, and the color thing is still the same. Im somewhat afraid of this stuff. But it "works" so well!

Id say half a can. It says 1.5 ounce to every Quart, and its 10 ounce can. Most cars, its half a can.

There is also the "Residual Moly" issue. You may only have to add half a can to each OC, or 1/3 to the 2nd OC. So one can can last two or three OCIs.

The previous poster before me has the same experience with the Oil upon Drain. I also noticed it may have increased consumption. MAY HAVE, nothing conclusive. However, it runs silky-smooth with it in there. Even half a can.

Maybe half a can each OC is best. Just be prepared for weird colors.

My wife commented on how nice the Jeep sounded with the Edge in it. It is parked inside a garage so noticing sound is pretty easy, and with the Edge it sounds quieter, those were her words. I agree.

I like your choice of words here Quote: "This is not a fact, just speculated by some".
It is when people try and turn speculation into facts then we have a problem around here and that seems to happen a lot lately! Again nice choice of words!!!!!!!!!!!
