Castrol DEX VI in a D3 Transmission

I stand corrected on the Maxlife not being nearly as thin as Dex VI. I didn't realize it was blended almost as thin. But really that Maxlife is recommended for Dex III among others and is thinner lends creedance that the viscosity isn't a concern.

While Dexron VI suitability for Dexron III applications is "proven and all over the internet" I agree with those who give specific cases where it did not work well because I had such an experience myself with my 1997 Infiniti i30 (aka Nissan Maxima) where Dexron VI sheared within 8,000 miles to the point that the transmission was whining unbearably when it never did so with Dexron III even after 18k miles of service (at which time I replaced that III with the VI).

How is that for a long sentence?

Replacing that Dexron VI with a higher viscosity multi-vehicle formula made it normal again. Shifting was never abnormal, only slight differences.

If you researched thro the forum there is a unanimous consensus that Mercon V is way superior to the regular DexIII fluids and it is still licensed!!!. Having said that,it is one of the best fluids I have tried on my maxima. If that comes as some consolation to this thread where folks swear by the wonder formulation DexVI like it is some Amsoil ATF.

I agree for the most part, but I don't recall anyone saying DexVI was a wonder fluid.

Mercon V is certainly very close to Dex III and would probably work fine. If I didn't own a GM transmission that the OEM stated was fine with Dex VI I probably wouldn't use it either. I wrote my post above to dispell the myth that Dex VI is "too thin" but just because it isn't too thin doesn't mean that it is right for all Dex III applications. Use whatever works.

For the OP - I am running DexVI in a 1999 Toyota Camry originally speced for DexIII and am very pleased with the performance. This transmission (transaxle) is a an Asin-Warner.

With the first drain and fill I got better performance similar to other times I've changed the fluid in this car. It likes new fluid! The fine performance has continued.

I think DexVI is probably a good replacement for most non-GM vehicles speced for DexIII but am not surprised that a few makes or models don't care for the changes. That's probably why GM only guaranty's it in their vehicles.
