cartridge oil filter

Why does a cartridge filter cost about 2x more than a can filter.
For an example get my pf47 for a 4.3 v6 chevy 1500 a little over $4.
If I was own the new chevy Colorado 3.5 v6 it would have to use a cartridge and cost
at least $10. Seems to me it would be cheaper to make the filter with out the can.
I think this filter is used on other gmc small v6 engines so it is not one of a kind.

From parts and manufacturing cost it should be cheaper, but it sold for more because lower volume than spin on filters.

They have to pay somebody to cut all those cans off, it raises the price.

I doubt it has anything to do with demand. Millions of cartridge filters are manufactured every year and when you produce that many of an item, the price is not going to drop if your production increases. They charge a lot for a cartridge filter because they can. When all companies selling a product are gouging the consumer it becomes an unwritten agreement not to lower prices as they are all making lots of money.

The prices are starting to drop. Just wait a few years and they will be the same price. Why were CDs and DVDs so much more expensive than VHS/audio cassettes when it is clear that it is far cheaper to manufacture a CD/DVD vs a VHS/audio cassette tape?

Not only do they not have the can, but they also have no ADBV and bypass...they should be half the price.

I was paying upwards of 3x for an Ecotec filter as for an equal quality can. At least with my Scion xD they are about the same price as cans now.

You can get them on Rockauto, even the AC DELCO filters for under $4. I buy a few filters whenever buying parts.
