Cartridge filter prep

I changed my first cartridge (non-canister) oil filter the other day. It went smoother than expected.

I have two concerns.

First, one oring was supplied with a Purolator. The ACDelco filter did not have an oring n the box.

Second, I did not oil the small oring at the tip of the filter. Should we treat these like we do can gaskets? Also, the old oring looked fine and probably had oil on it already, but is it optimal to presoak the filter or coat the new seals (the two o-rings) with fresh oil.



Is a pick the safest way to remove the old gasket.....IIRC it looked like a small flathead would have fit to remove it......

Small flathead screwdriver is what I normally use.

My oem Ac Delco cartridge filter made by hengst comes with a gasket everytime I order them. I always replace the gasket and when putting in the new filter apply oil around the gasket. I also just use a screwdriver to remove it.

You can squeeze the big o-ring around, drawing it tight, then you'll get a little loop when your fingers come together. Hook under that and work it off.

The little o-ring, I just smear with my already oily glove. Same as I would do for a can filter.

The AC Delco filter should not come with a new o-ring for the cap, that is not supposed to be replaced. For some reason a lot of the aftermarket filters include a new o-ring.

I assume we're talking Ecotec 2.2/2.4s here.

2012 Equinox 2.4, I have not changed the cap o-ring yet. The little o-ring I smear with oil too.

Exactly what you're supposed to be doing.

I only have 1 seal with oil change and thats the cap seal. This is on the 1.8l ecotecs and 1.4l ecotecs. I've always been told to replace the seal every filter change because when you take the cap off your breaking the seal. PF2257G comes with a new ring each oil filter you buy it comes in the box.

Are the 2.0 SC and turbos different?

Do you think removal will be tough since I forgot to oil the small o-ring?

I think on cans the gasket may leak until saturated, bind and be stubborn to remove, and possibly get left behind as it remains stuck to the plste....

I wouldn't worry about the little o-ring; just oil it next time. There's enough residual oil left behind to oil it going into its hole. As far as the o-ring on the cap in concerned, my wife's 2012 Equinox with 43K miles has the original one still on the cap. It is a light green color. The aftermarket filters come with a black ring but I never use it.

I never oiled the little o-ring.

I'm not sure if there is a difference between the 2.0 SC and the 2.2/2.4, I just know there was a TSB on the 2.2/2.4 that the cap oil filter ring was not to be replaced.

I wouldn't replace the big o ring with a cheap aftermarket one, unless it was leaking. Usually the non-OEM ones are cheap black rubber o rings and the OEM the green or red, higher quality ones. Replace as necessary, only.

Residual oil is enough on the small o ring too. I haven't had any leaks or issues removing filters on my 2.2 ecotec.
