Came off of a 2011 Impala with a 3.5. This thing is nasty, and rivals the 21085 I posted a few months ago for number of tears, although I'd guess this one was in service longer. Unfortunately I can't determine how long it was in service, the only thing I have to go on is Carfax, which lists it's last 2 services at 104k and 93k. Vehicle currently has 112k miles. Maybe 2 quarts of black sludge left in the sump and filter combined. Torn in 4 spots that I could see, the adbv was rock hard and had a bunch of holes, and one end cap fell off in my hands during inspection. Refilled it with Mobil Special 5w30 syn blend and put on a Proselect 21522.

That’s horrible! No wonder Advance Auto is moving to First Brands FRAM/Champ. I wonder if a 10W30 HDEO would clean that Chevy up?

Guess the ADBV chunks must have went into the engine, or did you find them on the dirty side of the media ?

Oops, made a mistake. It's a Dexos engine, so got refilled with Mobil Super 5w30 Dexos, not blend. It's filthy inside, but if it was being taken care of it wouldn't have gotten this nasty in the first place.

Nope, the bits weren't in the media or can that I could find.

Is this a potential case where cutting the adbv actually led to it being pulled into the motor??

Sure looks like it.

To be fair this filter was used way, way too long.

Only a legit full synthetic oil filter can be run really long and actually hold up to that.

Not a regular filter not meant for that purpose or use length.

Even though it’s not a truck, RGT seems to have some decent cleaning qualities, it seems to be cleaning up my 6.0 Express pretty well. I would combine it with a quality, preferably synthetic media filter, like an Ultra, Wix XP/NAPA Platinum, or Purolator Boss. Those ADBV cuts are one of many Purolator flaws, just can’t debur those base plate holes for some odd reason-and there’s no way a Classic/Red should be used past 7500 miles (or at all in my case).
