2010 Ford Explorer sport trac 4.0L 121k miles
in service 6k miles

out/off: 5 quarts Valvoline EP HM 5w-30 and 1 quarts HPL EC30 with Carquest Red R85372

in/on: 6 quarts HPL PCEO 5w-30 with Fram Endurance FE2

everything looks great minus the nitrile ADBV. stiff and didn’t return to shape. i watched the oil pour back out of the inlet holes when draining the filter.

I'm curious now as to the differences here. Standard versus premium. Price difference small. Worth the premium for 5K OCI? Maybe not.

'Assuming' the efficiency the same for both, I think it would depend on how much a silicone adbv is worth to the user. Takes me a while to get to 5k miles, at least a year, so I don't mind paying the extra. Imo, if done in 6 months or less, standard could fit the bill.

Do not know the exact efficiency numbers, but watching a few of Whip City Wrencher's YouTube videos, the CarQuest Blue Premium filters do have a denser media over the CarQuest Red filter. So it more than just the silicone ADBV and gasket.

i refuse to run a nitrile ADBV if i can help it. this filter was all i could get and the truck had to get back in service. for $2 go with the premium every time.

Yeah, having never seriously looked into the 'standard' red CQ, why I qualified right up front. In any case the Premium Blue with AAP code, an excellent price on a quality filter, so would be my call even with the price difference. Otoh, the Purolator TL14610 with nitrile adbv at the $2.40 price, worth that all day.

These would be for my Mazda's in signature. OEM does not have an ADBV. So, I would think standard would be just as good for 5K, even if efficiency is not as good. Assuming a clean engine anyway. ON the other hand, does an extra $2 break the bank? Certainly not.

I hadn't thought about it being for Mazda which has no adbv in the oe anyway. All things considered for the Mazda, fwiw I think your reasoning on using the standard red in place of the blue and saving some $$$$$ in the process, makes sense.
