CarQuest Red (Purolator) R85334 Cut Open

I have for your amusement a CarQuest Red (Purolator) R85334 cut open oil filter. This filter was installed on my 2013 Hyundai Elantra 1.8L for only 500 miles using Valvoline High Mileage 10W-30 Synthetic Blend oil. Short duration of OCI was due to this being a rinse oil change for having done a Berryman B12 piston soak and Liqui-Moly engine cleaner regime at the end of my prior oil change.

Only thing of noteworthy was the sealed seam pleat was wavy but there was no tears of the media.

In went a FRAM Drive FD9688 oil filter and Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 oil.

Looks good, I think you mentioned it already but you just poured the Berryman inside the spark plug holes & leave it sit for a day? Then drain the oil asap & then again a few times? I've never done anything like that myself but it's an intriguing option outside of Valvoline Restore and Protect.

I will tell you what I did but there is varying methods and opinions on doing the B12 piston soak to free oil control rings.

First of all, bought my Elantra used and was told it was not a oil user but many with this model have it so I decided to do it anyways since I was do my usual front to back service of every used vehicle I buy.

I removed the coil and spark plug and added 4oz if B12 to each cylinder and let it set for an hour. Then rotated the engine once by hand and let that set for another hour and did that one more time and let it set overnight. Next day, repeated the same process with another can of B12 and let sit another day. At this point, most would evacuate any remaining B12 in the cylinders if any, drain and change the oil, install plugs and coils and restart the engine. Since I had I had a can of Liqui-Moly engine cleaner, I poured than it and rand the engine for 15 minutes per direction and then did the oil change.

I am sure if you Google "Berryman B12 Piston Soak" will find others that go into it in more detail.

Thanks for the details on your method of doing this Berryman piston soak. I will dive into it a bit more later. I'd hesitate to start it with any Berrymans still present inside the cylinder bores but understand others may have their own version of how to do it. So, are you aware of it burning oil previously or haven't had it long enough yet but decided to do it anyways for likely what is a bit of oil burning? Let us know how much oil it consumes but I'm sure you'd hope it doesn't do too much.

Yeah, you want to make sure no B12 remains before installing the plugs and starting it. I used a Mity Vac for a couple of cylinders and remaining had already evaporated or drain into the crankcase.

This vehicle I did not establish if it had a actual oil use issue so it is not a good case analysis. Since doing it anyways, I have run the vehicle over a 1K miles and oil use does not appear to be a thing.

I will say I have done it before on a high mileage 2001 Corolla that was using a quart of oil every 800-1000 miles and it dropped the oil usage to maybe a quart over 5000 miles, so I know the process works.

That's great to hear of your success! Check back in after say 3-5k? I'm curious..ha!
 
Wix under the MH umbrella makes what looks like the same filter. Wix XP on website looks like this one, non XP looks like Asia sourced. Not that pictures can’t be wrong.
