The vehicle I'm changing oil in is a 2000 Jeep Wrangler Sport, 4.0L with 79,000 miles. I want to switch to synthetic oil, but the cost is pretty high. I went to Carquest to price oils, and I was told the Carquest brand is made by Valvoline and is the same as their line, but a lot cheaper. Is this true, or is it the stuff Valvoline rejects then sells to Napa or Carquest?

I once called a tech at Valvoline and was told dirctly that the Napa oil is Valvoilne BUT with a lesser add pack.

Well, I doubt it is rejected oil. Ashland just bottles oil to NAPA and others to whatever spec. In the days of SL I recall Synpower being rated SL/C-whatever, but the NAPA synthetic did not have the C rating. So there apparently was some difference.

Why not just get a VOA done for $20 and find out if the add packs are similar to the Vavloline. If it saves you money in the long run, wouldn't it be worth it?
