The red filters are the lower quality line, I'd opt for the blue filters, they have better construction. But I don't think they are on special.

The blues have the better media in them that filter better. They also have a better silicon anti drainback valve.

About 2-3 years ago I had the same question at my local Carquest. They could not answer my question but gave me a number in North Carolina if I remember correctly. The lady said the blue filters were Wix but the red filters were not. The red filters were not recommended for extended drain. If I remember right when we finished the conversation she was talking about 3000 mile oil changes. The red filter was regular paper media. Things could be different now.

Red filters are made by Wix but they are not the same as THE Wix filter. The Blue filters are the same as THE Wix filter and are the same as the Napa Gold filters. Confused? Don't be. If you want a Napa Gold or Wix equilvalent, get the Carquest Blue. If you want a good filter that is still a Wix product, but not as good as a Napa Gold or Wix, get the Carquest Red.
