After two years of conservative treatments, I was told by my pain management doctor it is time for surgery. I am looking for opinions from people who have had the procedure. Was the surgery worth it ? Did you have any complications ? And, most importantly, did it rid you of the pain ? I was a carpenter in the concrete business for 35 years so my entire body is pretty beat up. It is worst in the right hand, but the left is catching up. Any input would be appreciated.

I work a lot with my hands and my right hand would just go numb after a couple of minutes while working on a solenoid valve. After the surgery it was instant relief once the incision healed. I've not had any issues since and that was about five years ago.

Did you experience any loss of grip strength after everything healed ?

My mother had the surgery about 10 years ago. When the surgery was done, her hands worked a *LOT* better, she got some hand strength back and the pain was gone.

However, it comes back after a few years.

No, everything returned to normal, just no numbness and a scar on the palm of my hand.

I have had both of mine done by two different surgeons, both are good as new. The first surgeon went in through my palm, the second had developed a procedure using micro surgery. About a 10 mm scar on the wrist. No stitches only glue. I turn wrenches for a living and was back to work in about a week. Took it easy for about 2 more weeks and good as new.
If you can find a surgeon that does this procedure using microsurgery I highly recommend it, less pain after surgery and a much faster recovery time.

Thanks for the reply. I have found a doctor that does the endoscopic procedure and was leaning in that direction. Sunnyhollister, glad everything went well for you. My symptoms are the opposite of yours. When I am doing a chore with my hand they are fine. It is when they are idle that the tingling, pain, and coldness sets in.

I had my right wrist done about 7 years ago. I started experiencing numbness and then some severe pain. After three injections and the fact that the only way that I could sleep was to grab the top of the headboard of our bed, I decided that it was time. The pain relief was instantaneous and the numbness went away. Grip appears roughly the same before and after, and the only thing that I can see is a minor scar.

A 2nd and 3rd opinion from doctors would be a good idea. While people on BITOG can give you a perspective on their carpel tunnel surgery, only the doctors can evaluate your exact case.
