Carfax / Autocheck

Used both, Autocheck was cheaper. Lets you know how many owners, if a salvage title, mileage and if the car was in a reported accident. Doesn't tell you about unreported accidents among other things.

I'm not sure what you mean by "have carfax/autocheck". Typically, you purchase either one for a vehicle that you are serious about purchasing. The dealer that we bought our last used vehicle at provided a carfax that showed how many previous owners, reported accidents, dealer maintenance, etc. I believe you can run one on a vehicle that you currently own; however, I don't know why you would want to--if only to learn about the previous history of the vehicle. Hope this helps...

No my friend wants me to do a check on a truck he wants to buy. Owner says it has had accident work done to it, and we want to check it out before he makes a decision.

I Think both are good. I have used Autocheck before. They have a check where you can run 1 report for I believe 19.95 or unlimited for a few more dollars up to 25 vehicles as long as you are not using them for a business. I have seen Carfax on some dealers websites that also list the vehicle's service history if performed by a place that reports like a dealership. This might be good to show if the vehicle keeps going back for electrical gremlins or how frequent the oil changes were performed. I think both of these sites will list the accidents if reported to insurance but nothing is fullproof. Ive seen reports that show the date, county, and general damage area of the vehicle. These reports generally check against a salvage title as well.

just remember, if the accident was NOT reported and the owner or offender paid in cash, carfax/autocheck will not work.

Like most things in life, these reports have to be taken with a rain of salt and reality. Always have your mechanic check out the car first. Last year we found that the engine had been replaced by the manufacturer before it was even sold to the original owner. No one picked that up, not the dealer etc but my mechanic did.
